What you'll do...
Role summary:Walmart is seeking a Staff Software Engineer to lead the architecture and development of scalable backend and AI platform capabilities powering GenAI, AI agents, intelligent automation, analytics, and decision science across eCommerce. This role will build production-grade APIs, microservices, distributed systems, orchestration services, and cloud-native infrastructure using Python, FastAPI, Kubernetes, Docker, and GCP. The engineer will establish reusable patterns and engineering standards for reliability, security, performance, and scalability. As a senior technical leader, they will drive architectural decisions, mentor engineers, and partner with data science, ML, product, and engineering teams to accelerate production-ready AI innovation at Walmart scale.

Our eCommerce Decision Science Platform & Engineering team builds and scales data, AI/ML, and GenAI platforms that turn data and emerging technologies into business impact. We simplify complex technologies, automate analytics and data science workflows, and deliver reliable, secure, and cost-efficient platforms at Walmart scale. Our team enables AI agents, intelligent automation, experimentation, and next-generation analytics through reusable platform capabilities and strong engineering foundations. What you'll do:
- Architect and deliver scalable backend and AI platform capabilities supporting GenAI, AI agents, analytics, experimentation, and intelligent automation.
- Build production-grade APIs, microservices, distributed systems, and orchestration services using Python, FastAPI, Kubernetes, Docker, and cloud-native technologies.
- Design resilient event-driven architectures, asynchronous services, and integrations for high-scale workloads.
- Drive the full software lifecycle, including design, development, testing, CI/CD, deployment, observability, and reliability.
- Establish standards for API design, security, performance, and distributed systems.
- Lead architecture reviews, mentor engineers, and influence technical direction.
- Partner with engineering, data science, ML, and product teams to productionize AI solutions at Walmart scale.
What you'll bring:
- Deep expertise in Python backend engineering, including FastAPI, asynchronous programming, APIs, microservices, and production-grade distributed systems.
- Strong experience with Kubernetes, Docker, cloud-native architectures, CI/CD, and scalable infrastructure.
- Proven ability to design highly available, fault-tolerant, event-driven systems using messaging, caching, and modern data stores.
- Hands-on experience building GenAI/AI platforms, agent backends, LLM integrations, orchestration, retrieval, and streaming services.
- Strong knowledge of API security, observability, performance optimization, testing, and reliability engineering.
- Staff-level technical leadership, including architecture decisions, design reviews, engineering standards, and mentorship.
- Ability to partner across engineering, ML, data science, and product teams.

The annual salary range for this position is $143,000.00 - $286,000.00 Additional compensation includes annual or quarterly performance bonuses. Additional compensation for certain positions may also include :
