Overview

 

Department 440 Payload Launch Control Special Projects designs, develops, tests, and provides lifecycle support for special‑project payload systems on SEAWOLF and VIRGINIA Class submarines.

 

These systems rely on embedded hardware and software that safely and reliably control the movement of payloads in and out of the submarine.

 

The department also oversees subcontractor development and collaborates closely with internal partners across electrical design, software, and integrated logistics. Precision and disciplined systems engineering are essential due to the mission‑critical nature of this work.

 

Role Summary

This position supports the D440 SP Electronic Systems (Components) group, which is responsible for the design and engineering of laboratory and production electronic hardware used in payload handling and launching systems. The team develops ruggedized enclosures, embedded control systems, power distribution and supply systems, cooling solutions, networking hardware, and circuit‑level designs. Work includes prototyping, engineering development model fabrication, testing, and construction support.

 

The group also manages subcontractor activities, drafting specifications, overseeing vendor performance, and reviewing/approving technical deliverables. This role interfaces frequently with NAVSEA, NUWC, shipyards, design groups, laboratory teams, trades, the program office, other engineering disciplines, and numerous vendors.

 

Responsibilities may include

• Designing, developing, and integrating electronics hardware, including procurement and manufacturing support
• Prototyping new hardware designs in a laboratory environment
• Decomposing system-level requirements into hardware requirements
• Collaborating with multi-discipline engineering teams on integrated solutions
• Defining and managing system and component interfaces
• Integrating and complex systems and hardware/software components
• Validating system functionality through hardware development, software integration and combined testing
• Supporting system integration, validation, verification, troubleshooting, and shipboard test activities
• Managing vendor tasks and contributing to project management efforts
• Occasional travel

Qualifications

Required:

• Bachelor's of Science degree in Electrical, Computer, Mechanical, or Systems Engineering
• 0-5 years of post-graduate engineering experience
• Must be able to obtain and maintain a SECRET security clearance

 Preferred:

• Experience with Siemens NX/Teamcenter, IBM Rational DOORS, MBSE tools, Jira, Oracle ERP, and Microsoft Project
• Familiarity with submarine combat systems
• Experience developing arrangements, drawings, and engineering documentation
• Design/test/build experience with a DOD contractor
• Experience with the submarine construction process
