Software Engineer

Responsibilities

Peraton is seeking an experienced Software System Engineer with a primary focus on software/system architecture, high-performance databases/ETL, intelligent automation (RPA and LLM agentic workflows with RAG/embeddings), API/cloud integrations, CI/CD/DevOps, and data governance/PII–HIPAA compliance moving AI/automation from requirement to production.

 

This individual must be a self-starter with strong technical acumen, exceptional organizational skills, and the ability to influence without direct authority over staff engaged in project work.

 

This selected individual will support our SafeGuard Services (SGS) team, a subsidiary of Peraton, which performs data analysis, investigation, and medical review, to detect, prevent, deter, reduce, and make referrals to recover fraud, waste, and abuse in Medicare/Medicaid healthcare programs.

 

What you'll do:

The Software System Engineer will be responsible for the following but not limited to:

• Design, develop, test, and maintain enterprise software, scalable APIs/microservices, and secure integrations with third party and AI/LLM provider APIs.
• Lead system architecture, participate in design and code reviews, and apply modern engineering practices (containerization, infrastructure-as-code, observability, secure secrets management).
• Implement CI/CD pipelines and DevOps workflows using Azure DevOps and Agile best practices.
• Design, implement, and maintain relational databases; optimize performance, indexing, and query tuning.
• Manage data pipelines, ETL processes, data warehouse architecture, and GitHub/GitLab workflows.
• Ensure database and data security, backup/disaster-recovery, and enforce data governance and compliance (including PII/HIPAA).
• Prepare and curate datasets for AI/ML and administer vector/embeddings stores (e.g., pgvector, Pinecone, Azure AI Search) used for RAG.
• Design, build, deploy, and maintain RPA solutions; analyze workflows to identify automation opportunities and integrate bots with APIs and enterprise systems.
• Combine RPA with AI/LLM capabilities (intelligent document processing, classification, summarization) to extend automation beyond deterministic rules.
• Design, prototype, and deploy LLM and agentic-based solutions (RAG, embeddings, semantic search, multi-step agents) and evaluate model quality, latency, and cost trade-offs.
• Apply and enforce responsible AI practices (prompt/response logging, human in the loop review, hallucination mitigation, bias/accuracy monitoring) and collaborate with data, compliance, and business teams to move use cases from proof of concept to production.
• Telework available from EST or CST.

Qualifications

Basic qualifications:

• 2 years with BS/BA; 0 years with MS/MA; 6 years with a HS Diploma/equivalent
• Application development experience.
• Ability to work flexible hours.
• Strong proficiency in C#/.NET, Visual Studio, and the .NET Framework; experience with ASP.NET MVC and OOP principles.
• Proficiency writing complex SQL queries and stored procedures; experience with Microsoft SQL Server and MySQL/PostgreSQL.
• Experience with Python for automation and data tasks.
• Familiarity with RPA platforms (UiPath, Automation Anywhere, or MS Power Automate) and automation workflow design.
• Experience designing, building, and consuming RESTful APIs and integrating third‑party and AI/LLM provider APIs.
• Working knowledge of web technologies (HTML5, CSS3, JavaScript/TypeScript) and modern front‑end frameworks.
• Experience with version control (Git) and collaborative development workflows (GitHub/GitLab).
• Demonstrated exposure to modern AI/LLM technologies (Azure OpenAI/OpenAI/Anthropic APIs, prompt engineering, or embedding‑based search).
• Strong analytical and problem‑solving skills, with excellent communication and stakeholder collaboration abilities.
• US. citizenship required.  

 

Desired qualifications: 

• Experience with microservices architecture, event-driven design patterns, and test-driven development (TDD) practices in enterprise environments.
• Familiarity with MLOps/LLMOps practices including model evaluation, prompt and version management, guardrails, and cost/latency optimization, along with exposure to the Python data stack (pandas, scikit-learn, Hugging Face, notebooks, and open-source LLMs).
• Understanding of healthcare industry and regulations (e.g., HIPAA), and their implications for AI/LLM use with sensitive data,
• Experience on cloud platforms (Azure, AWS) and their native AI/ML services (Azure OpenAI, Azure AI Search, AWS Bedrock, SageMaker).

Target Salary Range

$66,000 - $106,000. This represents the typical salary range for this position. Salary is determined by various factors, including but not limited to, the scope and responsibilities of the position, the individual’s experience, education, knowledge, skills, and competencies, as well as geographic location and business and contract considerations. Depending on the position, employees may be eligible for overtime, shift differential, and a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay.
