We are hiring an Inventory Control Manager to protect inventory accuracy and product availability across a large, multi-location retail network. This role owns the day-to-day control loop for key retail product families — turning data signals into action with field operations, purchasing, and intracompany stakeholders so stockouts, overstocks, master-data errors, and opening readiness issues are found early and closed out.

This is a hands-on analytical and process role: exception triage, root-cause investigation, replenishment/level hygiene, replenishment frequency, program compliance, new-location readiness, and continuous improvement of the tools and reports the field teams and the home office rely on.

What you will do

Inventory accuracy & exception management

• Monitor daily and periodic inventory exception reports; investigate material swings and variances by SKU and location/region.

• Drive root-cause analysis (process, system, master data, damage, or demand) and assign clear owners and next steps until closed.

• Maintain disciplined follow-up so unexplained inventory movement does not linger.

Levels, replenishment & program compliance

• Own product-level / min-max / safety-stock style parameters for Retail SKUs and keep them current as demand and pack rules change.

• Own and manage safety-stock plan for product groupings at the store grouping, geographic region, and global levels with multiple variables.

• Audit location-level assortment and program enrollment (on/off compliance) and correct master data.

• Support specialty accessory / parts inventory health, including purchasing holds, level retain/remove decisions, and alignment with Procurement.

• Make recommendations for replenishment allocation frequency.

Network readiness (new locations & remodels)

• Prepare and distribute retail inventory opening packets for new centers (plans, layouts, display/assortment files, and related readiness docs for start-up).

• Support showroom layout and remodel requests with accurate product, display, and timing guidance via action-plan deliverables to field operations executives.

• Own and manage inventory safety-stock and ramp-up plan for new locations.

Systems, reporting & continuous improvement.

• Own, improve existing, and develop new Point-of-Sale inventory management tools that store teams use to manage incoming shipments and keep daily inventory records accurate.

• Use BI / analytics platforms and operational reports to surface risk; improve report design so leaders can act quickly.

• Document system defects that break inventory truth (e.g., pack-size / algorithm issues) and shepherd fixes with product/IT partners.

• Build simple, durable metrics and playbooks so the control process scales beyond one person.

Field support, enablement & subject-matter leadership

• Support approximately 2,500 company-owned field locations with clear, practical guidance on retail inventory questions and exceptions.

• Become the recognized subject matter expert for U-Haul retail inventory policies, tools, data, and operating practices.

• Guide and influence field and cross-functional partners who do not report directly to this role.

• Identify repeat questions and failure points, then convert them into self-service tools, standardized processes, training, job aids, and decision rules.

• Reduce avoidable home-office dependency while maintaining the right controls, escalation paths, and accountability.

Partnership & communication

• Work daily with Retail Sales leadership, inventory peers, Procurement, operations, real estate/field partners, and intake/ticket surfaces.

• Translate complex inventory issues into practical actions for operators and executives.

• Escalate crisply: what changed, business risk, and the decision or action needed.

Required qualifications:

• 4+ years in inventory control, inventory planning/allocation, warehouse inventory accuracy, or multi-unit retail supply chain (or equivalent).

• Proven experience investigating inventory discrepancies and driving corrective action across functions.

• Strong analytical skills; advanced Excel (or equivalent) and comfort with ERP / WMS / POS / BI reporting tools.

• Clear written and verbal communication; able to brief executives and coach field partners without jargon overload.

• High ownership, detail orientation, and follow-through on recurring control work.

• Ability to manage multiple concurrent workstreams (daily firehose + projects) without dropping either.

Preferred qualifications:

• Experience in multi-location retail or distribution networks.

• Background setting or maintaining min/max, safety stock, or product-level parameters.

• Exposure to purchasing holds, pack/case rules, or inventory master-data stewardship.

• Experience filing and driving system defects / continuous improvement with engineering or product teams.

• New-store opening or remodel inventory readiness experience.

• Bachelor’s degree in supply chain, business, operations, or related field; APICS CPIM and CSCP is a plus.

• Familiarity with U-Haul (or similar) retail inventory, BI, and ticketing tools after onboarding.
