Job Description Summary
This position is responsible for the coordination of all academic programs and student services for the Department of American Studies. Duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to: course scheduling; serving as curriculum manager for all processes in the CourseLeaf Curriculum Management System; serving as the departmental transfers evaluator; assigning graduate student teaching assistant positions, including offer letters; managing office inventory and room reservations; liaising with academic and administrative offices on day to day operations including registration and commencement planning; and participating in recruitment efforts and event planning related to our academic programs. The Coordinator also consults with the program head (Chair) and administrative officials (Director of Undergraduate Studies, Director of Graduate Studies, and Director of U.S. Latino/a Studies Program) regarding policies, trends and interpretation of data and program needs. The Coordinator also tracks alumni placements and other materials needed for statistical reports required for submission to the college. In addition, this position supervises AMST’s Federal Work Study students who provide daily administrative assistance in the office including greeting visitors, routine administrative tasks, and the design of flyers and other promotional materials.This position performs a variety of professional administrative duties in support of the day‑to‑day operations of a function or program.
This role offers comprehensive academic, administrative, and operational support for the department. Key responsibilities include:
- Coordinating student registration
- Providing advising support
- Coordinating graduate clearances
- Organizing visits for prospective students
- Scheduling courses and updating the curriculum
- Coordinating academic surveys, reports, newsletters, and promotional communications
- Overseeing front-office operations, including work-study staff, office access, inventory, maintenance coordination, and departmental events.

Minimum Qualifications
Education: Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university.
Experience: One (1) year of experience in education or academic affairs.
Other: Additional work experience as defined above may be substituted on a year for year basis for up to four (4) years of the required education.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES:
Knowledge of program management and assessment.
Knowledge of instruction for higher education students.
Skill in the use of Microsoft Office and Google Workspace products.
Ability to interpret and apply policies, procedures, regulations, and laws.
Ability to multitask while demonstrating a commitment to customer service.
Additional Job Details
Preferences:
• Experience with administrative and academic policies and procedures at a higher education institution.
• Knowledge of American Studies or other interdisciplinary humanities academic fields
• Knowledge of UMD administrative and academic policies, procedures, and systems.
