Job Profile:

Clinical Instructor

Job Summary:

The Department of Pathobiological Sciences, School of Veterinary Medicine, University of Wisconsin-Madison seeks applicants for a clinical instructor in Clinical Pathology with a negotiable start date in the fall of 2026. The appointment is annual with potential for renewal. This full-time position is designed to emphasize clinical service with a focus on clinical pathology and concurrent clinical pathology resident mentoring and instruction of DVM students. Additional opportunities for professional development and expansion of services are available depending on the applicant’s areas of interest and hospital needs. The successful applicant will have access to a diverse diagnostic case load from the UW Veterinary Medical Center (UWVMC), participate in the professional DVM and resident instructional programs in clinical pathology, and engage in collaborative research projects based on candidate interest. If required, time off for ACVP certifying examination study is provided. The School of Veterinary Medicine and Pathobiological Sciences Department offers the successful candidate the opportunity to join the clinical pathology section with a dedicated team of three board-certified clinical pathologists with diverse expertise. They will work in a collegial and supportive environment with exceptional resources in pathology, infectious disease pathobiology, oncology, food animal production medicine, and other disciplines. The UWVMC opened a $130 million veterinary medical teaching hospital expansion and remodel in the spring of 2024, providing state-of-the-art clinical and research facilities. The School of Veterinary Medicine was ranked in the top 10 in 2026 by US News and World Report. A midsized city with big-city energy, Madison offers diverse cultural and outdoor attractions locally and is within a 2-hour drive of Milwaukee and Chicago.

Responsibilities: Clinical instructor will share clinical diagnostic duties with two clinical faculty and another clinical instructor. Service duties include providing high quality diagnostic descriptions, interpretations, and/or consultations for all patient samples and test types submitted to the clinical pathology laboratory while mentoring a clinical pathology resident in these same tasks. Mentoring of clinical pathology residents extends to organizing, guiding, or contributing to seminars, rounds, research projects, presentations and publications. Mentoring of residents in other specialties may occur during service weeks, in rounds, or during projects/publications. Assuring the quality of analyzer-derived data, laboratory procedures, and skills of laboratory staff and student employees is also shared with three clinical pathology colleagues and should include clinical pathology trainees whenever possible. The amount of time dedicated to teaching and mentoring of DVM students will be based on assigned clinical duty and the candidate’s interests and may include preparation of modular content and creation/delivery of face-to-face active learning, clinical skills laboratories, and elective/selective offerings in the preclinical curriculum as well as instruction of DVM students in their clinical training. Pursuit of research projects, presentations, and publications is encouraged and will be supported with available funding. Service on hospital or school committees or taskforces should align with the candidate’s interests, experience, and professional development goals.
