Job Description:

JOB DESCRIPTION

The Associate Dean assists the Dean of the College of Arts & Behavioral Sciences in all matters related to day-to-day operations and management.  Specific responsibilities include coordinating the academic course schedule for fourteen departments, collaborating with department chairs on the hiring and supervision of adjunct faculty members, reviewing academic records and making recommendations regarding academic dismissal appeals, and serving as hearing officer for the grade grievance process within the College. 

 

In addition, the Associate Dean supports ABS participation in Admissions events and other College functions, participates in unit committee meetings, and reviews endowed scholarship applications for ABS-designated scholarships and selects award recipients.

 

The Associate Dean serves as the first point of contact for student and parent concerns and chairs special committees within the College.  These include the Dow Visiting Scholars & Artists Selection Committee, which assesses faculty proposals and allocates funds, and the Gross Award Selection Committee for the University’s annual award in literature.  The Associate Dean also manages the Fredericks • Follett • Roethke Graduate Fellowship in the Arts & Humanities and coordinates the Theodore Roethke Memorial Poetry Award recipient’s selection and visit.

 

Other duties as assigned may include charging search committees and evaluation teams, as needed, and serving on College committees such as the ABS Strategic Planning Committee or on University Standing Committees, if designated by the Provost.   

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

 

• Terminal degree for field required with tenure at SVSU
• Minimum of five years of professional experience in higher education
• Demonstration of strong written and verbal communication skills
• Ability and disposition to work collaboratively in a shared office environment
• Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
• Experience and ability to positively interact with all members of the campus community
• Ability to perform the essential duties of the position with or without accommodations

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

• At least two years in an academic leadership position(s)
• Track record of moving complex initiatives from concept to implementation
• History of fundraising and/or grant writing
