The HKUST Energy Institute (EI) at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) is seeking a dedicated and meticulous Senior Technical Officer to oversee our laboratory facilities, ensure rigorous safety and regulatory standards, and provide vital technical support to our research teams.

 

The appointee will be responsible for a wide range of operational and technical duties, playing a critical role in managing lab setups, equipment maintenance, safety compliance, and day-to-day experimental workflows.

 

Key Responsibilities

Lab Setup & Operations:

• Coordinate with Laboratory Services Team, manage laboratory setup, commissioning, layout planning, and daily facility operations.
• Coordinate lab access, scheduling, and workflow management for research teams.

Safety & Regulatory Compliance:

• Develop and implement comprehensive Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and safety protocols.
• Ensure full compliance with all safety and regulatory standards, and act as the primary liaison with the safety office.
• Oversee the safe handling, storage, and disposal of hazardous materials.

Equipment & Inventory Management:

• Oversee equipment procurement, installation, calibration, and maintenance schedules.
• Manage chemical and material inventories efficiently to support ongoing projects.

Research & Technical Support:

• Support research teams in experimental planning, technical troubleshooting, and execution.
• Assist with basic IT infrastructure setup, audio-visual (AV) maintenance, and meeting room media support in lab areas as a value-added responsibility.
• Undertake other ad-hoc duties and technical analyses as required. 

Requirements & Qualifications
Applicants should have a bachelor’s degree in engineering, chemistry, materials science, energy-related disciplines, or a related field with at least 2 years of solid laboratory management experience. Prior experience working in battery, materials science, or energy-focused labs is strongly preferred. 

The ideal candidate should have sound knowledge of laboratory safety regulations and statutory compliance; strong organizational, problem-solving, and leadership skills, and excellent communication abilities to liaise effectively with researchers and safety officers. Direct experience in setting up new laboratories from scratch and demonstrated experience handling hazardous materials would be an asset. Occasional travel to Hong Kong Science Park (HKSTP) as required. (Duration: 2 years, renewable) 

Starting salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.  Fringe benefits including annual leave, medical and dental benefits will be provided.  A gratuity will be payable upon successful completion of contract.
