  • Base Salary starting at $131,108 + 17% superannuation 

About the opportunity

The School of Medical Sciences (SOMS) is seeking a Senior Technical Officer to provide specialist technical, operational and infrastructure support to the Biomanufacturing Incubator, enabling high-quality research activity and supporting the delivery of innovative biomanufacturing projects.

This laboratory-based role will oversee the operation and maintenance of specialised biomanufacturing equipment, including 3D bioprinters and associated instrumentation, while providing technical guidance and support to researchers using the facility. The Senior Technical Officer will contribute to the establishment and optimisation of facility workflows, support experimental activities, coordinate access to shared resources and ensure equipment, processes and laboratory operations meet safety, quality and operational requirements.

Working collaboratively with researchers, students, academic partners, industry stakeholders and clinical collaborators, the role will support the growth of the Biomanufacturing Incubator through user training, continuous improvement initiatives and contributions to infrastructure development, including grant collaborations and equipment acquisition activities.

Your key responsibilities will be to:

  • maintain, operate and monitor specialised biomanufacturing equipment, including 3D bioprinters and associated laboratory instrumentation

  • support the design and optimisation of biomanufacturing laboratory infrastructure and facility workflows

  • coordinate equipment servicing, calibration, preventative maintenance and troubleshooting to ensure reliable and safe operation

  • provide hands-on technical support to researchers during experimental setup, equipment use and workflow execution

  • assist with method optimisation, equipment configuration and routine troubleshooting during research activities

  • prepare laboratory materials, consumables and facility resources required for biomanufacturing projects

  • deliver onboarding and training sessions for new facility users, including laboratory orientation, safety requirements and operational procedures

  • support laboratory operations by implementing and maintaining standard operating procedures, safety requirements and quality processes

  • monitor laboratory conditions, consumable inventory and operational workflows to maintain an efficient research environment

  • coordinate equipment bookings, facility access and shared resource allocation to optimise facility utilisation

  • communicate operational updates, maintenance requirements and scheduling changes to researchers and project teams

  • identify opportunities to improve facility workflows, equipment performance and user experience

  • support the implementation of new technologies, processes and equipment within the Biomanufacturing Incubator

  • contribute to infrastructure acquisition activities, including supporting grant applications and collaborations with academic, industry and clinical partners

  • undertake other duties and contribute to projects appropriate within the classification level as required.

About you

  • postgraduate qualifications in a relevant field or an equivalent combination of relevant training and experience

  • certified to work in a laboratory environment

  • significant experience working in a laboratory environment, with demonstrated experience supporting research activities

  • significant experience preparing and conducting experiments using established research methodologies

  • experience operating, maintaining and troubleshooting laboratory equipment and instrumentation

  • experience implementing laboratory safety requirements and maintaining compliance with relevant procedures

  • experience using databases and/or statistical analysis programs to support research activities

  • strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to resolve technical issues and provide practical solutions

  • excellent organisational and planning skills, with the ability to manage competing priorities and support multiple research projects

  • strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build effective relationships with researchers, students and stakeholders

  • ability to work independently while contributing effectively as part of a collaborative research environment.
