Underwriting Specialist

Our client, a leading commercial insurance organisation, is seeking an experienced Underwriting Specialist to manage and grow its Engineering and Renewable Energy portfolio across Africa. This is an exciting opportunity for a commercially minded underwriting professional who combines strong technical expertise with business development capabilities to achieve profitable portfolio growth while delivering exceptional broker service.

Key Responsibilities

• Underwrite and accept Engineering risks within delegated authority levels.
• Manage, retain, and grow an allocated portfolio of brokers and clients.
• Drive Gross Written Premium (GWP), profitability, and loss ratio targets.
• Identify and develop new business opportunities within the Engineering and Renewable Energy sectors.
• Build and strengthen relationships with brokers through regular engagement and exceptional service delivery.
• Analyse broker portfolios to identify growth opportunities and improve business performance.
• Ensure compliance with underwriting guidelines, governance standards, and regulatory requirements.
• Monitor portfolio performance and implement underwriting actions to achieve profitability targets.
• Manage Engineering underwriting activities in line with business objectives.
• Provide technical underwriting support and market insight to internal and external stakeholders.
• Support credit control activities, including payment follow-ups and reconciliation assistance where required.
• Promote continuous improvement, technical excellence, and adherence to company policies and best practices.

Minimum Requirements

• Matric (NQF Level 4).
• Insurance qualification.
• Minimum 3 years' Engineering Insurance experience.
• Proven sales experience with a strong presence within the broker community.
• RE qualification and compliance with industry regulatory requirements.
• FAIS compliant.
• Valid driver's licence.
• Clear criminal and credit record.
