About The Healing Place of New Hanover County

The Healing Place of New Hanover County is a nonprofit organization dedicated to transforming the lives of individuals affected by addiction. Every day, we provide food, shelter, clothing, and our nationally recognized recovery program to nearly 1,000 individuals at no cost to the client.

Our work is grounded in respect, trust, honesty, compassion, opportunity, diversity, and accountability. We believe that the strength of our organization starts with the people who carry out our mission every day.

As The Healing Place continues to grow and evolve, we are looking for an experienced HR leader who can help us build the workforce, culture, and people practices needed to support our mission for the long term.

The Opportunity

We are seeking a Director of Human Resources to serve as a strategic partner to the Executive Director and leadership team while leading all aspects of the organization's Human Resources function.

This is an ideal opportunity for an experienced HR professional who enjoys both strategy and hands-on HR work. The Director will help leadership think proactively about the workforce while also serving as a trusted resource to managers and employees.

We are looking for someone who can understand the organization, anticipate people needs, use data to guide decisions, develop managers, strengthen retention, and build HR practices that support both employees and the mission. Most importantly, we want an HR expert to support work that has a meaningful impact on people and the community.

What You Will Do

  • Develop HR priorities and initiatives that support the organization's strategic goals.
  • Provide leadership and guidance on organizational structure, staffing, employee relations, compensation, retention, and workforce development needs.
  • Anticipate workforce trends, needs, and opportunities, and provide thoughtful recommendations that support the organization's people strategy and long-term goals.

Talent Management & Workforce Development

  • Partner with leaders to identify current and future workforce needs and skills-gaps.
  • Strengthen career development, internal advancement, succession planning, and leadership development.
  • Develop and coordinate training and professional development opportunities for managers and employees.
  • Help managers become stronger people leaders through coaching, training, and practical HR support.
  • Build programs and initiatives that strengthen employee engagement and retention.

Recruiting & Onboarding

  • Provide strategic oversight of recruiting and hiring across the organization.
  • Partner with hiring managers to identify staffing needs and develop effective recruiting strategies.
  • Increase efficiencies in recruiting processes to attract qualified, mission-aligned candidates.
  • Oversee selection practices, onboarding, and orientation to create a strong and engaging introduction to The Healing Place.
  • Monitor recruiting metrics, turnover, time-to-fill, and other workforce trends.

Employee Relations & Manager Support

  • Serve as a trusted resource for employees and managers on workplace concerns and employee relations matters.
  • Coach managers through performance, communication, conflict, attendance, and employee concerns.
  • Conduct and document workplace investigations using consistent HR best practices and in accordance with applicable employment laws.
  • Provide guidance on corrective action, performance improvement plans, and employee separations.
  • Promote consistent, fair, and well-documented employment practices throughout the organization.

Leave, Benefits & Employee Support

  • Oversee employee benefits administration and serve as a resource to employees regarding benefit programs.
  • Manage employee leave processes, including FMLA, ADA accommodations, and other applicable leaves.
  • Coordinate with benefit providers, brokers, and other outside partners as needed.
  • Ensure employees receive timely, accurate, and compassionate support when navigating benefits, leave, or workplace concerns.

HR Compliance & Policies

  • Stay current on changes in employment law and HR best practices and advise leadership on necessary changes.
  • Maintain HR policies, procedures, and employment practices consistent with applicable federal and North Carolina employment laws.
  • Maintain accurate and compliant employee records and HR documentation.
  • Review and update the employee handbook, HR policies, job descriptions, and related documents.
  • Ensure appropriate HR compliance training and manager education.

Compensation & Workforce Analytics

  • Support the development and maintenance of a fair, competitive, and sustainable compensation structure.
  • Monitor internal equity and external market competitiveness.
  • Develop meaningful HR metrics and workforce reports for leadership.
  • Track and analyze turnover, retention, recruiting, compensation, engagement, and other workforce trends.
  • Use workforce data to identify patterns and recommend actions.
