What you'll do...
Role summary:As a Staff Data Scientist at Walmart, you will leverage advanced analytical techniques and machine learning to transform complex data into actionable business insights. This role involves identifying optimal data sources, developing predictive models, and deploying scalable solutions that drive strategic decision-making. You will collaborate across functions to align data strategies with business objectives, ensuring data quality and governance standards are met. Your expertise in data visualization and communication will support clear stakeholder engagement, while mentoring team members to foster technical excellence and continuous innovation within a dynamic, data-driven environment.
About the team:
The team leads advanced data science initiatives focused on enhancing multi-agent orchestration, personalization, and experience quality across key product areas such as PDP, PLP, and checkout. With expanding responsibilities, the team requires strong ownership of end-to-end data science solutions, including modeling, system quality, and cross-functional collaboration. This role demands senior technical leadership to address complex challenges in search integration, ranking, and agentic actions, ensuring timely delivery of roadmap commitments and maintaining high standards of customer experience at scale. The team drives significant business impact through innovative data strategies and execution excellence.
What you'll do:
- Design and develop Generative AI and conversational systems powered by transformer-based LLM architectures (e.g., GPT, Claude, Gemini).
- Lead the development of agentic AI systems, including system design for multi-agent workflows, reasoning chains, tool use, and orchestration frameworks.
- Develop and optimize prompt engineering strategies, including system prompts, structured prompting, retrieval augmentation, and guardrail design.
- Build and deploy end-to-end conversational AI pipelines, from data preparation and model training to evaluation, and monitoring.
- Analyze conversational data to identify patterns, perform error analysis, and continuously improve model quality and user experience.
- Design evaluation frameworks and experimentation methodologies for conversational AI systems, including offline benchmarks and online A/B testing.
What you'll bring:
- Proven expertise in predictive analytics, machine learning algorithms, and data science methodologies.
- Proficiency in Python programming and experience with data pipelines
- Strong understanding of data strategy, including data quality, governance, and scalable data storage solutions.
- Ability to assess, validate, and tune models using statistical and machine learning techniques.
- Experience interpreting complex business contexts to translate requirements into actionable data solutions.
- Skilled in deploying and monitoring models in production environments with continuous performance evaluation.
- Effective communication skills to present data insights and guide junior team members.

The annual salary range for this position is $143,000.00 - $286,000.00 Additional compensation includes annual or quarterly performance bonuses. Additional compensation for certain positions may also include :
