Job Title: Event Staff Student AssistantLocation: St. PaulPay Rate: $18.00
Department: Athletics / Event OperationsReports To: Associate Director of Athletic Events and Operations
Position Summary
The Event Staff Student Assistant supports the successful execution of intercollegiate athletic contests and special events hosted by the Athletic Department. This position assists with game day and event operations for Men’s Basketball, Men’s Hockey, commencement ceremonies, and other athletic and campus events. The role requires strong customer service skills, attention to detail, professionalism, and the ability to work in a fast-paced environment.
Student Assistants play a vital role in creating a safe, organized, and engaging experience for student-athletes, coaches, officials, fans, and campus guests.
Essential Functions
Event & Game Day Operations
Assist with pre-event setup and post-event breakdown of venues, including courts, ice surfaces, staging, tables, signage, and equipment
Support operations for Men’s Basketball, Men’s Hockey, graduations, and other athletic competitions and special events
Set up scorer’s tables, media areas, hospitality spaces, and credential stations
Ensure venue readiness in accordance with conference and NCAA regulations
Assist with locker room preparation and team arrival logistics
Guest Services & Crowd Management
Provide exceptional customer service to fans, participants, and guests
Serve as usher, ticket scanner, credential checker, or access control staff as assigned
Assist with crowd flow, seating guidance, and ADA accommodations
Address guest concerns professionally and escalate issues when necessary
Event Support & Administration
Distribute credentials and event materials to staff, media, and teams
Assist with visiting team needs and game officials' logistics
Support in-game promotions and special presentations as directed
Maintain communication via radio or assigned communication systems
Follow all safety protocols and emergency procedures
Compliance & Professionalism
Adhere to NCAA, conference, and university policies and procedures
Represent the Athletic Department in a professional manner at all times
Maintain confidentiality of sensitive information
QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum Qualifications
- Currently enrolled student in good academic standing
Ability to work evenings, weekends, holidays, and extended hours as required by event schedules
Strong interpersonal and customer service skills
Ability to lift up to 25–50 pounds and stand for extended periods
Ability to work both independently and as part of a team
Preferred Qualifications
Interest in sports management, event operations, facility management, or athletic administration
Previous experience in event operations, customer service, or athletics
Strong organizational and communication skills
Ability to remain calm and professional in high-pressure environments
ELIGIBILITY
To be eligible for student employment, St. Thomas students must be degree seeking at the undergraduate, graduate and doctoral levels.
