Senior Packaging Engineer

Ashland has an exciting opportunity for a Packaging Engineer to join our Ashland LLC Global Engineering Department. This is a very visible, significant role within the Company as a global technical leader for packaging equipment and standards supporting solid and liquid chemical products across regulated end markets. This is fully remote position will report to Robert Burgman, Director of Engineering.

The responsibilities of the position include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Responsible for standardizing packaging formats, materials, and equipment across regions, while maintaining regulatory and customer-specific compliance.
  • Drive sustainable, reliable, and cost-effective packaging solutions through close collaboration with Procurement, Operations, Engineering, Regulatory, Quality, and EHS.
  • Lead packaging initiatives and manage documentation aligned with European Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) goals.
  • Lead packaging and packaging waste compliance programs related to country-specific requirements under Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) regulations
  • Hands-on experience in executing the installation and retrofitting of packaging equipment
  • Responsible for developing global technical specifications and standards
  • Work with Procurement to enable competitive bidding and consistent quality across suppliers.
  • Work with Engineering to lead packaging-related capital projects through concept, design, testing, commissioning and startup
  • Travel Responsibilities – You will get to see the world and meet your colleagues 30% of the time
  • Actively contribute to the organizational goals by taking initiative, executing on goals and focusing on performance and safety
  • Improve the organization capacity and capabilities through building collaborative relationships, optimizing diverse talent and utilizing positive communications and influence with others

What This Role Is Not:

  • This is not a management position – while you will collaborate with other team members and departments, this is a Subject Matter Expert individual contributor role with no direct reports
  • This is not a project management position – The focus will be on the technical aspects of capital projects and ensuring successful and compliant project outcomes
  • Not an entry level position – we need a candidate to hit the ground running with solid experience and a background to prove it. “Self-Starter” qualities are essential.

In order to be qualified for this role, you must possess the following:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in mechanical, industrial, or packaging engineering
  • 10 years of progressive experience in industrial or chemical packaging.
  • Experience operating in regulated manufacturing environments
  • Working knowledge of European packaging sustainability and regulatory frameworks
  • Packaging materials sourcing and supplier management
  • Packaging testing, validation, and change management
  • Capital Project Execution
  • proficiency in excel and data analysis
  • Excellent inter-personal and communications skills
  • Demonstrated responsible and ethical behavior at all times
  • The ability to help the company drive greater value through understanding the business, making complex decisions and creating the new and different
  • Fluent in English

The following skill sets are preferred by the business unit:

  • Experience in the pharma, food, or personal care sectors
  • Experience with U.S. based projects and suppliers
  • Management of vendors that submit regulatory reports
  • Sustainability program support:
    • material selection and design
    • packaging footprint reduction, and documentation
    • maintaining documentation for regulatory and customer audits
