Description
Staff Platform Engineer – Payments Technology
*Sydney or Melbourne location
About the Role
Join one of Australia's largest and most critical technology environments, helping power payment services that support millions of customers and businesses every day.
Our Payments platforms process approximately 40% of Australia's payments, making reliability, resilience, observability, security and operational excellence fundamental to everything we do.
As a Staff Platform Engineer, you will act as a senior technical leader across multiple squads and domains, shaping the platforms, engineering capabilities and operational practices that enable teams to deliver world-class payment experiences safely and at scale.
This role is focused on building and evolving internal engineering platforms, paved roads, automation capabilities and developer tooling that accelerate software delivery, improve developer experience, strengthen platform reliability and drive engineering consistency across the Payments ecosystem.
You will influence engineering strategy, platform architecture, observability, resilience and modern engineering practices while helping teams continuously improve how they build, deploy and operate software.
What You'll Be Responsible For
Platform Engineering & Developer Experience
- Design, build and evolve internal developer platforms that enable engineers to deliver software safely, consistently and efficiently.
- Create scalable self-service capabilities, reusable platform components and paved-road solutions that accelerate delivery and reduce cognitive load.
- Drive platform modernisation initiatives that improve developer productivity and simplify software delivery.
- Build automation capabilities that eliminate repetitive tasks and enable engineers to focus on solving customer problems.
- Partner closely with engineering squads to identify friction points and develop platform solutions that improve engineering effectiveness.
- Act as a force multiplier across the organisation by creating capabilities that raise the productivity and quality of multiple engineering teams.
Reliability, Resilience & Operational Excellence
- Champion reliability engineering practices across critical Payments systems.
- Drive initiatives that improve service availability, resilience, recoverability and operational maturity.
- Lead the adoption of reliability-focused engineering principles including failure analysis, resilience testing, incident learnings and operational readiness.
- Improve platform health through proactive identification and remediation of reliability risks and technical debt.
- Foster a culture where operational excellence is a core engineering responsibility rather than an operational afterthought.
- Partner with teams to continuously improve customer outcomes through stable, highly available and resilient systems.
Observability & Engineering Insights
- Shape and implement observability strategy across Payments technology platforms.
- Establish best practices around metrics, logs, traces and distributed systems monitoring.
- Drive adoption of OpenTelemetry and distributed tracing capabilities across modern cloud-native applications and services.
- Improve engineering visibility through meaningful telemetry and actionable operational insights.
- Enable faster incident detection, diagnosis and resolution through effective observability patterns and platform capabilities.
- Define engineering standards and practices for monitoring, alerting and operational intelligence at scale.
Technical Leadership & Engineering Culture
- Provide technical leadership across squads, crews and domains.
- Influence engineering strategy through collaboration, mentoring and technical guidance.
- Champion modern engineering principles, continuous improvement and engineering excellence.
- Help develop engineering standards, patterns and reference architectures.
- Mentor engineers and platform practitioners, helping grow capability across the Payments organisation.
- Actively promote a strong engineering culture focused on ownership, learning, collaboration and customer outcomes.
- Drive communities of practice and contribute to uplifting technical capability across teams.
Cloud Engineering, Automation & Security
- Design and build cloud-native platform capabilities on AWS.
- Develop Infrastructure as Code and platform automation solutions.
- Improve CI/CD capabilities and software delivery pipelines.
- Embed security, governance and compliance requirements throughout the software delivery lifecycle.
- Drive DevSecOps adoption and support Secure Software Development Lifecycle (SSDLC) practices.
- Partner with engineering teams to ensure platform capabilities are secure, scalable and maintainable.
Skills & Experience
We use a broad range of tools, technologies and frameworks. We do not expect you to know everything, but experience with some of the following will help you succeed in this role.
