Position Summary
The Payroll Specialist I provides responsive and reliable customer service while supporting payroll processing activities and developing knowledge of payroll laws, policies, and systems. This entry-level role performs routine payroll transactions, responds to employee inquiries with empathy and professionalism, and assists with payroll audits and reconciliations.
Job Duties and Responsibilities
· Provide responsive support to team members by answering payroll questions, researching pay discrepancies, and assisting with accurate payroll information in Workday
· Support weekly and off-cycle payroll processing, including new hires, terminations, and employee changes
· Assist leaders in coaching team members with time entry and payroll-related processes
· Maintain accurate payroll and employee personal information in Workday
· Process payroll deductions, garnishments, banking details, and other statutory requirements
· Perform payroll reconciliations and audits following established processes
· Partner with HR, managers, and other departments to coordinate and resolve payroll-related issues
· Ensure compliance with company policies and payroll procedures
· Support year-end payroll activities and tax reporting
· Support payroll timelines with flexibility for weekend or after-hours processing as needed
· Maintain confidentiality of employee and payroll information with discretion and professionalism
Position Requirements
· High School Diploma or General Educational Development (GED) certificate required
· Bachelor's or Associate's degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, Human Resources, or related field preferred
· 0-2 years of payroll, accounting, administrative, or related experience
· Experience supporting multi-state and Canadian payroll operations preferred
· Strong customer service and communication skills with ability to communicate clearly, professionally, and empathetically
· Ability to appropriately handle sensitive and confidential payroll and employee information with discretion and professionalism
· High attention to detail and accuracy with ability to perform audits and validations following established processes
· Strong organizational and time-management skills with ability to manage multiple priorities
· Proficiency with Microsoft Excel and Office applications
· Ability to learn and navigate Workday Payroll system
· Ability to meet weekend or after-hours commitments as required to support payroll timelines
Certifications
· Fundamental Payroll Certification (FPC) or Certified Payroll Professional (CPP) preferred
Preferred Qualifications
· Workday Payroll experience preferred
Pay
This is an hourly position with wages starting at $23.50 and pays up to $31.75, based on experience and qualifications.Benefits
