The City of Auburn's Public Works Division is establishing a new eligible list for the position of Maintenance Worker I - CDL, which will be used to fill current and future vacancies through the end of 2026.
Current vacancies are available in the Water division, and for Mechanic's Assistant.
Salary scale shown is minimum pay rate prior to the 2% CDL premium, and the maximum pay rate including premium pay and highest longevity pay, applicable only after 20 years of service.
This position is represented by Teamsters Local Union No. 117, and the current Collective Bargaining Agreement is effective 1/1/26 - 12/31/28.

Applicants who meet the minimum qualifications will be invited to take an in-person assessment test (Mechanical Aptitude Test, 1.5 hours). Applicants must receive a passing score to be placed on the eligibility list for a screening interview with hiring managers. Applicants with a passing score may be invited to a formal interview and practical testing when there are open vacancies. The eligibility list established for this position is generally good for 6 months.
Testing
Our next round of Mechanical Aptitude testing will take place on October 19, 26, and 29, 2026. Employees are expected to perform all of the duties of the Maintenance Worker I - CDL class as assigned. The list below is not meant to be all inclusive, and the full job description can be viewed here. Staff will have more detailed descriptions for each of the divisions to review when attending the mechanical aptitude test.
Some MWI - CDL - Water primary duties include:
- Operating and/or driving various equipment and machinery including but not limited to: pickups, one-yard loaders or less, tractors and implements, sign truck, pipe pusher, rollers, jackhammers, air compressors, concrete saws, chains saws, all mowers except tractor mowers used to cut rights-of-way, blowers, leaf machines, hand equipment, chippers, small power equipment, generators, sprayers and spreaders, forklifts, and V Box sanders.
- Being responsible for the operation of dump trucks; paint trucks; and/or a combination of a single vehicle with a gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of more than 26,000 pounds, a trailer with a GVWR of more than 10,000 pounds if the gross weight rating of the combined vehicle(s) is more than 26,000 pounds, a vehicle designed to transport 16 or more persons (including the driver), or any size vehicle which carries placarding amounts of hazardous materials.
- Performing minor mechanical repairs on such equipment.
- Installing, maintaining, and repairing water pipe; assisting in the maintenance of pump stations.
- Building forms and pouring concrete; laying asphalt and grading surfaces.
- Reading and following blueprints and schematics.
- Initiating work orders and repair orders and maintaining accurate records of time and materials used in work.
- Interacting courteously with other employees, utility customers, vendors and the public.
- Correctly and safely operating all equipment and tools used in assigned division.
Some MWI - CDL - Mechanics Assistant primary duties include assisting mechanics with:
- Diagnosing malfunctions on gas and/or diesel engines, heavy and specialized equipment, pumps, and generators and other equipment; makes repairs by adjusting or replacing parts including, but not limited to, tires, belts, axles, hydraulic cylinders, carburetor, electrical wiring, starters, etc.
- Making emergency repairs in the field or in the shop on equipment including, but not limited to, back hoes, graders, automobiles, dump trucks, pumps, and generators.
- Preparing new vehicles for operations by installing aftermarket equipment and electronic components, as necessary to meet operational requirements.
- Repairing and replacing items including, but not limited to, tires and belts; performs oil changes and lubricates vehicles.
- A High School Diploma or equivalent; AND
- One (1) year of full-time, paid related work experience; AND
- A valid driver's license without impending loss at time of appointment.
For CDL eligible positions: you must obtain a Class "A" CDL and tanker endorsement within one (1) year of employment as a condition of continued employment.
If necessary for assigned work, an employee will be required to obtain and maintain a Public Pesticide Operator's license, DOH Water Distribution Manager Certification, First Aid Certification, Flagging Certification, Forklift Certification and/or Defensive Driving Certification, or other required certification or license.
REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS
Employee performs work independently under general supervision of division supervisor. Work may be prioritized, assigned and reviewed by Maintenance Worker II employees on a project basis. Performance is reviewed through observation, reports, discussion and periodic formal evaluation.
