The Job: Infrastructure Engineer
The Infrastructure Engineer is a hands-on technical role responsible for implementing, supporting and maintaining infrastructure solutions across customer and Frontline environments.
The role will work across both on-premises and Public/Private cloud infrastructure, supporting technologies including servers, virtualisation, storage, backup and replication.
The Infrastructure Engineer will also provide senior technical support for complex infrastructure incidents escalated through the Service Desk, taking technical ownership of issues and working with internal resolver groups, vendors and technology partners to drive them through to resolution.
The role will contribute to infrastructure projects, migrations and service improvements, helping to ensure customer environments are secure, resilient, supportable and appropriately documented.
Principle Responsibilities:
- Implement, support and maintain customer infrastructure across on-premises, Public/Private cloud and hybrid environments.
- Support and troubleshoot virtualisation, server, storage, networking, backup and replication technologies.
- Support Microsoft Azure and Microsoft 365 infrastructure hybrid services.
- Act as a third and fourth-line technical escalation point for complex infrastructure incidents, taking technical ownership and driving issues through to resolution.
- Deliver infrastructure projects and migrations independently or alongside consultants and other technical specialists.
- Implement and maintain backup, replication, disaster recovery and business continuity solutions, including supporting recovery and failover testing.
- Monitor infrastructure health, performance and capacity and proactively address identified issues.
- Work with internal resolver groups, vendors and technology partners to investigate and resolve complex technical incidents.
- Maintain accurate technical documentation, implementation records and knowledge articles within the Frontline ITSM platform.
- Identify opportunities to improve infrastructure reliability, supportability, security, automation and operational efficiency.
- Provide technical guidance and share knowledge with the Service Desk and wider Managed Services team.
- Communicate effectively with customers and stakeholders throughout projects, incidents and technical changes.
Essential Skills and Experience
The successful candidate will have:
- A minimum of five years' experience in IT, with at least two years' experience in third-line support, infrastructure engineering or project delivery.
- Strong experience supporting and troubleshooting Microsoft Windows Server environments.
- Practical experience with virtualisation technologies, such as VMware vSphere/ESXi, Citrix, Microsoft Hyper-V or equivalent platforms.
- Experience with backup, replication and disaster recovery technologies, such as Veeam Backup & Replication, Azure Backup, Azure Site Recovery or equivalent solutions.
- Good working knowledge of Microsoft Azure, including virtual machines, virtual networking, storage and associated infrastructure services.
- Experience supporting Active Directory, Group Policy, DNS, DHCP and Microsoft Entra ID.
- Experience supporting hybrid environments integrating on-premises infrastructure with Microsoft cloud services.
- Good understanding of networking concepts including TCP/IP, VLANs, routing, switching, DNS, DHCP and VPN technologies.
- Experience monitoring and troubleshooting infrastructure availability, performance and capacity.
- Experience handling complex technical incidents and escalations within a structured IT support environment.
- Ability to take technical ownership of incidents while recognising when vendor, specialist or management escalation is required.
- Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to communicate effectively with customers and technical teams.
