Description
The Sector Manager is responsible for aggressively spearheading the penetration of the East African mining sector by establishing Safal Group as a primary technical partner. This is an operational, "boots-on-the-ground" role focused on building deep relationships with mine engineers and procurement heads to drive the sales of a comprehensive range of steel products, including HR, CR, Metal Coated and Color Coated Sheets, structural steel and pipes, as well as complex engineered building solutions (PEBs and Modular Houses) and specialized underground roof support systems.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Ecosystem Penetration & Relationship Building;
- Direct Field Engagement: Conduct frequent, proactive visits to remote mine sites across Tanzania, DRC, Kenya, Uganda, and Rwanda to build rapport with site-level decision-makers.
- Local Content Compliance: Manage the registration and maintenance of Safal entities on Local Content Vendor Lists to ensure priority in regional mining procurement cycles.
- Closed-Circle Networking: Navigate the "closed" mining supplier ecosystem through persistent physical presence and networking with Project Engineers and Buyers.
2. Technical Sales & Solution Engineering;
- Product Sales: Personally, drive the sale of "bread and butter" steel items including HR, CR, Metal Coated and Color Coated flat products, Pipes & Tubes, and other hot rolled structural products such as angles, channels, and beams.
- Building Solutions: Market and coordinate the sale of Pre-Engineered Steel Buildings (PEBs), roofing systems, prefabricated/container converted houses for warehouses, factories, workshops, and modular staff housing.
- Specialized Mining Support: Drive technical sales of safety-critical underground roof support systems, including split sets, washers, and mining mesh.
- Consultative Advice: Assist customers who lack technical awareness by advising on optimal steel grades, metal coating systems (for corrosive mine environments), and structural layouts.
3. Commercial & Operational Execution;
- Tender Management: Take full ownership of the tender lifecycle—from identifying opportunities and site measurement to submitting technical quotations and final bids.
- Pricing & BQ: Prepare precise Bills of Quantities (BQ) and technical quotations based on current market rates and margin policies.
- Logistics Coordination: Work closely with the supply chain to ensure "Just-in-Time" delivery to remote mine sites, overcoming regional infrastructure challenges.
4. Quality, Safety & Compliance;
- Ensure all supplied steel products and structures meet international mining standards and company quality protocols.
- Adhere to and enforce strict mine-site safety protocols during all site visits and technical inspections.
5. Budgetary & Procurement Responsibilities;
- Achieve and exceed sales volume and margin targets for the mining segment.
- Ensure project deliveries remain within the agreed commercial budget.
- Assist in finding out and empaneling competent sub-contractors and suppliers for Cold Room Projects.
Qualifications and Experience Required:
- Bachelor's degree in Civil, Mechanical, or Mining Engineering.
- Membership with a recognized professional body (e.g., ERB Tanzania) is an added advantage.
- Work Experince 3–7 years of hands-on experience in Technical Sales or Site Engineering within the mining or heavy industrial sector.
- Demonstrable experience in "hunter" roles, breaking into new industrial markets and managing high-value tenders.
- Familiarity with structural steel fabrication, PEB systems, and underground support hardware.
Key Competencies & Skills:
Technical Skills;
- Proficiency in reading structural blueprints.
- Ability to provide on-site technical guidance.
Relationship & Communication;
- Superior negotiation skills.
- Ability to build rapport with both site foremen and corporate procurement heads.
Operational Agility;
- Highly self-motivated "go-getter" who can work independently and travel extensively to remote locations.
