Position Details:

The Opportunity:

The Washington State University Elson S. Floyd College of Medicine (WSU ESFCOM) seeks a board-certified or board-eligible internal medicine physician for a full-time Outpatient Core Faculty position with the WSU Internal Medicine Residency Program in Everett, Washington.

Outpatient Core Faculty teach and supervise residents in the Providence-WSU Internal Medicine Center, the residency program’s flagship continuity clinic located at Providence Regional Medical Center Everett. The central clinical responsibilities of the position are precepting residents during primary care visits and providing direct primary care to a personal patient panel.

The anticipated workload is approximately: 40% direct patient care, 40% resident teaching and precepting, and 20% protected academic and administrative time. Up to 30% protected academic and administrative time may be negotiable for a candidate who assumes additional responsibility in a defined area of program need, such as resident assessment, mentorship and coaching, clinical competency activities, remediation, curriculum development or another agreed-upon area. The final distribution of responsibilities will be based on program needs and the successful candidate’s experience and interests.

Protected time supports substantive participation in the residency’s educational mission. Areas of involvement may include:

  • Ambulatory curriculum design and development

  • Resident mentorship and coaching

  • Resident assessment and clinical competency activities

  • Point-of-care ultrasound education

  • Quality improvement and population health

  • Community outreach and engagement

  • Residency recruitment and selection

  • Program evaluation, accreditation, and continuous improvement

  • Faculty development and educational scholarship

We welcome applicants at all career stages, including graduating residents and early-career physicians. The ideal candidate values service, is committed to caring for rural and underserved communities, and wants to develop as a clinician-educator while maintaining an active community-based primary care practice. Prior formal faculty experience is not required.

About the WSU Internal Medicine Residency Program

Established in 2021, the WSU Internal Medicine Residency Program was the inaugural residency program of WSU ESFCOM.

Our university-affiliated, community-based program prepares physicians for careers in general internal medicine and its subspecialties, with a particular commitment to improving access to care in rural and underserved communities throughout Washington. Our holistic resident-selection process seeks residents from varied backgrounds who demonstrate a meaningful commitment to service, collaboration, and community health.

Residents train in an X+Y scheduling model that supports a consistent, immersive presence in their continuity clinic. Their primary clinical site is Providence Regional Medical Center Everett, a 630-bed Level II Trauma Center. Residents also complete rotations through partnerships with The Everett Clinic, Western Washington Medical Group, and the Veterans Administration, among others.

As a growing residency program, we offer faculty the opportunity to help shape our educational approach, ambulatory curriculum, mentorship model, quality-improvement work, and long-term program identity.

About the Providence-WSU Internal Medicine Center

The Providence-WSU Internal Medicine Center is the residency program’s flagship continuity clinic, located on the campus of Providence Regional Medical Center Everett. Its location allows residents and faculty to participate in patients’ care across acute and outpatient settings.

The clinic serves patients with a broad payor mix and a wide range of cultural, linguistic, and economic backgrounds reflective of Snohomish County. Many patients experience significant medical and social complexity, giving residents substantial experience managing high-acuity concerns in primary care and addressing the conditions that affect their patients’ health.

Residents and faculty are supported by an in-house multidisciplinary team that includes medical assistants, registered nurses, social work, nurse care management, integrated behavioral health professionals, and a clinic-based community organizer. Community internal medicine and family medicine preceptors work alongside the program’s outpatient core faculty, contributing additional clinical perspectives and resident mentorship.

Faculty Appointment

The successful candidate will hold a continuous career-track appointment as Clinical Assistant Professor within the Department of Medical Education and Clinical Sciences at the Elson S. Floyd College of Medicine. Consideration of rank at Associate Professor or Professor will be commensurate with candidate qualifications and in alignment with department promotion guidelines.
