Assistant Professor of Biology

The Science Department at Chatham University invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor of Biology to begin August 9, 2027. This is a 9-month faculty appointment. We seek a teacher-scholar with expertise in human biology, cell biology, genetics, or a closely related field. The successful candidate will contribute to required and elective coursework in areas such as human biology, cell biology, genetics, anatomy, physiology, molecular biology, or related fields depending on expertise. This position supports the undergraduate Human Biology, Cell and Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, and Neuroscience programs, the Master of Arts in Biomedical Studies program, and pre-health curricula.

Duties and Responsibilities:

The successful candidate will be expected to:

• Teach an annual load of 18 credits (approximately 6 courses)
• Teach undergraduate biology courses in our human biology program, including cell biology, genetics, anatomy, physiology, molecular biology, or related areas
• Contribute to laboratory-based instruction in biology
• Support courses required across biology majors, biochemistry, neuroscience, and pre-health pathways
• Maintain a productive scholarly agenda appropriate to a primarily undergraduate institution
• Develop and maintain an active undergraduate research program
• Advise undergraduate students in biology, pre-health, and related pathways
• Mentor students in research, academic planning, and preparation for graduate or professional programs
• Participate in curriculum development, assessment, advising, departmental and university service
• Contribute to interdisciplinary collaboration within the Science Department and related health-focused programs

Qualifications:

• Ph.D. in Biology, Cell Biology, Genetics, Human Biology, Physiology, Anatomy, Molecular Biology, Biomedical Science, or a closely related field by the time of appointment
• Demonstrated potential for effective undergraduate teaching
• Ability to teach courses in at least one of the following areas: cell biology, genetics, anatomy, physiology, molecular biology, or related fields
• Commitment to inclusive, student-centered teaching, advising, and mentoring
• Ability to develop a sustainable research program involving undergraduate students

Preferred Qualifications:

• Experience as the instructor of record teaching biology lecture and laboratory courses
• Ability to teach genetics, cell biology, immunology, histology, anatomy, or physiology
• Experience mentoring undergraduate research
• Postdoctoral or industry-equivalent experience
• Research interests that can involve undergraduate students and complement departmental strengths
• Experience advising pre-health students
• Interest in interdisciplinary teaching across biology, biochemistry, neuroscience, and health science programs
