About the Department

At UChicago Medicine, faculty and staff in the Department of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery are committed to delivering exceptional patient care, innovative research, and education, and are leaders in the field of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery. The internationally recognized expertise of the Section enables the team to offer the most advanced and innovative approaches to the management of otolaryngology disorders. Covering a broad range of clinical specialty programs, their commitment is to meet the needs of each patient and their loved ones by delivering comprehensive yet personalized and compassionate care. In addition, the Section of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery conducts a broad range of research in areas such as allergies, chronic nasal and sinus disorders, head/neck cancers, cochlear implants, health disparities, airway problems, and pediatric otolaryngology. Through comprehensive research efforts, the Section aims to develop and improve treatments for these diseases and disorders, and ultimately, improve the quality of life for patients.


Job Summary

The job uses best practices and knowledge of patients and exercises autonomous decision making in the assessment, diagnosis and initiation of delegated medical treatments. The scope of practice includes family support, discharge planning, staff education, consultation and research.

Responsibilities

  • Provides dedicated on-site clinical coverage at the Crown Point, Indiana clinic, holding fully independent general ENT and otology clinics and managing both non-surgical and otology patients.

  • Supports the head and neck cancer program in Hyde Park, coordinating post-treatment care, managing survivorship follow-up, and facilitating appropriate referrals to surgical faculty for complex cases.

  • Works collaboratively with a multi-disciplinary team, using advanced clinical skills and knowledge to provide assessment, evaluation, testing, treatment, therapies, medical management, and other direct care to general ENT and otology patients.

  • Provides healthcare services typically performed by a physician, under the supervision of a physician in outpatient settings.

  • Examines patients to obtain information about their physical condition. Instructs and counsels patients about prescribed therapeutic regimens, emotional problems of daily living, and health maintenance.

  • Administers or orders diagnostic tests, such as x-ray, electrocardiogram, and laboratory tests, interprets diagnostic test results for deviations from normal.

  • Makes tentative diagnoses and decisions about the management and treatment of patients.

  • Obtains, compiles, and records patient medical data, including health history, progress notes, and results of physical examination.

  • Performs therapeutic procedures, such as injections, immunizations, suturing and wound care, and infection management.

  • Prescribes therapy or medication, typically with physician approval.

  • Designs patient education programs that include information required to make informed health care and treatment decisions.

  • Evaluates goals and outcomes taking into account the benefit-versus-burden, safety, quality, and cost-effectiveness for the patient, family and the organization.

  • Develops diagnostic strategies and therapeutic interventions needed to achieve the goals and outcomes of the patient’s plan of care.

  • Has a deep understanding and response to adverse drug reactions, with special attention to vulnerable populations such as infants, children, pregnant and lactating women, or older adults. Develops and coordinates APP training and professional development activities.

  • Performs other related work as needed.


Minimum Qualifications

Education:

Minimum requirements include a college or university degree from an accredited school/college.


Work Experience:

Minimum requirements include knowledge and skills developed through a combination of education and a minimum of 2 years of relevant work experience in a related job discipline.


Certifications:

Current and/or eligible for State of Illinois licensure/registration required. Eligibility to be privileged and credentialed through the Medical Staff Office (MSO). - State of Illinois

Preferred Qualifications

Education:

  • An advanced degree, or equivalent if license received prior to July 1, 2001, from an accredited school/college of nursing or completion of an accredited Physician Assistant educational program accredited by the Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant, Inc. (ARC-PA).

Experience:

  • Clinical experience in a related area of specialty.

Licenses and Certifications for Advanced Practice Nurse:

  • Current Advanced Practice Nurse (APN) license in the State of Illinois or eligibility to receive by start date. 

  • Current Registered Nurse (RN) license in the State of Illinois or eligibility to receive by start date.  

Licenses and Certifications for Physician Assistant:

  • Current Physician Assistant license/registration in the State of Illinois or eligibility to receive by start date.

  • Certification from the National Commission for the Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA) by start date.

Preferred Competencies

  • Knowledge of basic medical terminology.

  • Knowledge of pharmacy, phlebotomy, injections, and general ENT/otology procedures.

  • Ability to provide direct patient care in a professional and respectful manner.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication.

  • Ability to read documents or instruments.

  • Ability to perform detailed work.

  • Ability to perform multiple concurrent tasks with occasional interruptions.

  • Ability to exercise discretion and confidentiality while handling sensitive information.

Working Conditions

  • Direct patient contact in an ambulatory clinical care setting.

  • Exposure to human blood, human blood components, and/or products made from human blood.

  • Exposure to infectious material.

  • Exposure to X-Ray Producing Equipment.
