The College of Social Sciences and Humanities and its ten tenure units are the home of the Experiential Liberal Arts. The College of Social Sciences and Humanities and the School of Law at Northeastern University seek to fill an open-rank faculty position at the tenured/tenure-track Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, or Full Professor level in the area of Artificial Intelligence Policy, Regulation, and Governance, broadly construed to include how human-centered AI systems can be used, governed, and designed responsibly as well as how they impact politics and society.  A comparative or international perspective is desirable.  The tenure home will be in the Department of Political Science or School of Public Policy and Urban Affairs, with a joint appointment possible in the School of Law.  Policy-relevant Economists may also be considered.  This position will be at the Boston campus. This is a full time, benefits-eligible position with an expected start date of August 16, 2027.

Responsibilities:

The person filling this position will teach foundational courses in AI governance, comparative politics or international relations, and/or AI policy and law, advanced courses in their area of expertise, and contribute to joint curriculum and research initiatives between the two colleges. Their research will be on topics that have relevance to the design and use of AI across different regional and global contexts.

Qualifications:

• JD and/or Ph.D. in Political Science, Public Policy, Economics, or a related field in hand by the employment start date is required.
• The successful candidate will have a strong scholarly record or research program on issues related to AI policy and impact, a demonstrated commitment to excellence in undergraduate teaching, and be prepared to work with global student populations. 
• Candidates seeking appointment at the Associate level should already hold a position at the rank of Associate, or have a comparable level of at least 5 years of related experience by employment start date. Candidates seeking appointment at the Full Professor level should already hold a position at the rank of Full Professor or have a comparable level of at least eight years of related experience by employment start date.

Applicants should submit a cover letter that addresses their interest in and qualifications for the position, a curriculum vitae, a teaching statement, a research statement, evidence of teaching effectiveness (including sample syllabi and teaching evaluations), and the names and contact information for at least three individuals who can provide a letter of recommendation. 

The research statement should address the research topics/questions you have worked on in the past, key findings you have discovered, key products (or outputs) of these efforts, funding you have received, as well as research plans for the future. Please also highlight cross-disciplinary research efforts you have undertaken, research done with students or community partners, and/or public facing scholarship.

The teaching statement should summarize your past instructional and mentorship experiences, your pedagogical philosophy, and what you would like to teach at Northeastern. Please highlight any pedagogical innovations, experiential learning activities, or strategies for teaching a global student population.

Pay Range:

Assistant Professor: $94,000.00 - $122,000.00 | Associate Professor: $111,000.00 - $131,000.00 | Professor: $140,000.00 - $230,000.00

With the pay range(s) shown above, the starting salary will depend on several factors, which may include your education, experience, location, knowledge and expertise, and skills as well as a pay comparison to similarly-situated employees already in the role. Salary ranges are reviewed regularly and are subject to change.
