Reports to: Chief Financial and Operating Officer
Classification: Exempt | Full Time | 2080 Hours Annually
Position Summary: The Director of Human Resources is the hands on manager of a full spectrum of human resources functions, supporting a dynamic school community. Serving as a trusted resource for faculty and staff, this position oversees the entire employee lifecycle, including recruitment, onboarding, benefits administration, employee relations, performance management, and HRIS data management. The Director of Human Resources ensures organizational compliance with state and federal labor laws, manages employment agreements, and drives initiatives that promote workplace equity, employee engagement, and retention. Reporting to the Chief Financial and Operating Officer and working closely with school leadership, the ideal candidate is a proactive communicator, skilled problem-solver, and detail-oriented professional capable of balancing strategic HR projects with day-to-day administrative support in an educational setting.

Major Responsibilities:
Recruitment, Onboarding & Talent Management:
- Coordinate the recruitment process for faculty, staff, seasonal and substitute positions, including creating job postings, providing candidate screenings, scheduling interviews and conducting background checks.
- Manage onboarding and orientation for new employees, ensuring smooth integration into school culture.
- Oversee the complete offboarding process, including conducting exit interviews, analyzing turnover trends, and processing final transitions.
Benefits and Compensation:
- Administer employee benefits programs and address employee questions related to benefits enrollment and changes.
- Assist with employee payroll and timekeeping functions, coordinating with the finance office for accurate processing.
Employee Relations & HR Support:
- Act as the first point of contact for HR related inquiries from faculty and staff.
- Serve as a point of contact for employee inquiries and concerns regarding policies, procedures, and workplace issues.
- Facilitate conflict resolution and promote a positive work environment.
HRIS Management:
- Maintain and update the HR information system (HRIS) to ensure accurate employee records and reporting. Identify ways to utilize software to its fullest potential.
- Generate and analyze HR metrics to support decision-making.
HR Projects and Administration
- Collaborate with the CFOO to review, revise and implement HR policies and procedures that reflect current labor laws and industry best practices.
- Help maintain and update the employee handbook and other staff related documents.
- Create, issue, track and collect annual employment agreements for faculty and staff, ensuring timely completion and proper recordkeeping.
- Serve as a resource for policy interpretation and implementation across departments.
- Handle and process personnel changes, ensuring compliance with relevant agreements and policies.
- Guide supervisors through performance improvement plans and progressive disciplinary processes, ensuring fair and consistent documentation.
Compliance and Recordkeeping
- Maintain and update employee records in compliance with school policies and labor regulations.
- Ensure proper credentialing and background checks for all staff and volunteers, in accordance with school policies.
- Complete various administrative HR tasks, including file management, record keeping, and documentation.
- Manage school van driver certification program.
- Support adherence to state and federal labor laws, including FMLA, ADA where applicable.
Administrative Functions:
- Provides administrative support to the CFOO.
- Serve as the primary liaison to the finance office for payroll processing and benefit invoice reconciliation.
- Manage the administration of Workers’ Compensation and FMLA (along with other leaves of absence and ADA accommodations), handling documentation, tracking leave and ensuring compliance with legal and school policies.

Requirements
Work Environment:
- Work is performed in a typical school office environment, which may involve frequent interaction with students, staff, and parents.
- Regular activities include walking, sitting, standing, talking, listening, and engaging in face-to-face and phone communication.
- Requires frequent reading, writing, and use of fine motor skills for handling office tasks such as managing correspondence, completing forms, filing documents, faxing, copying, and typing.
- Visual focus and attention to detail are essential for reviewing documents, data entry, and operating office equipment.
- Frequent use of computers and telephones is required throughout the day.
- Occasionally may need to bend at the waist or knees or reach above shoulder level to retrieve files or access items stored on shelves.
- Ability to lift or carry moderately heavy items, such as boxes of paper or office supplies (typically up to 20 pounds), on occasion.
- Ability to periodically work extended days, evenings and weekends as needed.
Position Qualifications:
- Education:
- Bachelor's degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, or related field, required.
Work Experience:
- Minimum 3-5 years of progressive experience in human resources, generalist functions, or personnel administration, preferably within an educational or non-profit environment.
Knowledge:
- Strong understanding of federal and state employment laws and regulations (e.g. FLSA, FMLA, EEO, ADA).
- Demonstrated knowledge of benefits administration and open enrollment processes, HR best practices, policies and procedures.
- Expense coding and general ledger knowledge.
- Payroll processing and timekeeping expertise.
- Office management and general administrative procedures.
Skills and Competencies:
- Excellent communication and organizational skills.
- Strong judgment and understanding of workplace dynamics.
- Familiarity with HRIS and accounting software.
- Ability to multitask and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
