Description
Purpose and Impact:
The Environmental Specialist position is responsible for overseeing and coordinating all aspects of the environmental program to ensure interpretation, recommendation and compliance with safety, health and environmental regulations (US and Australian) and/or company policy.
The position supports a multi-disciplined facility located southwest of Alice Springs, with additional supporting infrastructure located within the Alice Springs township. The facility is self-sufficient, generating power, water supply, treatment, storage and distribution, general waste and hazardous waste generation, chemical use, maintenance activities, warehousing and transportation services, dining facility, health and fitness facilities including medical clinic and gym.
Work Schedule:
Day shift – 5 days per week, 8 hours per day
Essential Responsibilities:
Develop and maintain workplace procedures, processes and permits related to environmental compliance and safety including water testing and monitoring, flora and fauna management, spill prevention and response, and hazardous and general waste management.
Conduct environmental sampling including industrial, potable, bore, pool and wastewater.
Deliver toolbox talks and internal training on environmental and safety topics to proactively mitigate risks and inform safe working practices.
Maintain register of environmentally controlled spaces and managed areas and provide technical advice on compliant land management practices.
Organize and facilitate external vendors and partnerships with NATA accredited testing labs
Review construction environmental management plans and assist Project Managers with obtaining necessary permits and certificates to conduct new construction works.
Ensure compliance with all site environmental health and safety requirements
Conduct investigations into workplace incidents and document findings and corrective actions.
Any other reasonable duties as requested
Work Environment, Physical Demands, and Mental Demands:
Ability to lift up to 20kg independently
The position involves approximate equal time office work and standing/moving field-work
The position includes field-work including industrial spaces such as powerplants and exterior areas in a high-heat location
Constant use of vision and mental alertness is required
Minimum Requirements (Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities):
Excellent communication and negotiation skills and working knowledge of SharePoint, Microsoft Office Suite, and integrated software applications are required.
Knowledge of various subcontract types (Cost-Plus, Fixed Price, Time & Materials, and subsets thereof).
Security Clearance Required:
It is a condition of employment that employees obtain and retain the appropriate level of security clearance and medical clearance applicable to each role. The employee will require a NV1 Department of Defence Security Clearance (Australian)
Minimum Education:
Bachelor’s degree in environmental science
Minimum Years of Experience:
3-5 years work experience in the environmental science field
Basic knowledge of computer applications e.g., Microsoft Word, Excel, and data entry
High-level of communication; written and verbal, teamwork and interpersonal skills
Ability to work independently and in collaboration with a group
Planning and organizational skills
Qualifications:
Tertiary qualifications in Environmental Science, or a related field
Strong verbal and written communication
Proficient in Microsoft Office suite
