Department: Environment, Health and Safety Manager

Reporting to:  Attica Plant Manager

Classification: Full-time

Location: Attica, IN

Summary

  • Under direction of the Site Leader, along with direction from corporate EHS leadership, the Site EHS Leader’s primary objective is to develop, execute, and sustain the Attica site’s strategic and tactical plan for all Environmental, Health, Safety, and Security matters. The primary deliverable of this position is to direct and oversee all programs that support of the site’s primary goal of continuous improvement in the Environmental, Health, Safety, and Security areas.
  • The EHS Leader plans and directs activities for the site’s EHS organization. The position provides leadership and technical expertise to meet C&D Technologies corporate and site expectations in environmental, health, safety, and security management systems. It also ensures compliance with policies and applicable regulations as an active member of the Site Leadership Team.

Essential Functions

Leadership

  • Set tactical and strategic direction and provide leadership for the EHS department. Ensure EHS team is keeping a tactical focus on value-added tasks.
  • Actively participate on the Site Leadership Team, providing unbiased feedback and direction for the site.
  • Maintains communication with corporate EHS to keep abreast of strategic initiatives and expectations, and to provide guidance and feedback regarding all corporate initiatives and expectations.
  • Participate on corporate teams, as necessary, to improve C&D Technologies global EHS network and performance.
  • Develop and lead a site sustainability initiative.

 Operational EHS Management

  • Establishes and continually refines the plant’s long term EHS strategy and improvement plan.
  • Establishes EHS performance and cultural metrics to gauge the “current state” and provides the basis for continuous improvement measurement.
  • Manages the site EHS budget and associated spending. Leads the EHS budget development process annually and provides monthly spending analysis reports as necessary.
  • Participates in the development of the site’s capital expense spending budget and site plan.
  • Reviews all EHS capital expense requests for risk, cost, and prioritization within the overall plan and budget.
  • Review and enhance the site’s incident investigation process. Ensure a robust process is in place to fully determine root cause and corrective actions as necessary. Provide leadership and facilitation of all incident investigations.
  • Ensures EHS matters are fully addressed in plant job analysis studies. Participate in the review of those studies.
  • Provide oversight and management of all site EHS related action items.
  • Manage industrial hygiene sampling and personal exposure monitoring activities.

 Regulatory Compliance

  • Ensure site compliance with all federal (EPA), State (Indiana), and local air, water, and waste regulations.
  • Ensure compliance with government contract security related requirements.
  • Responsible for the overall site EHS management system and process.
  • Must partner with maintenance, engineering, and operations teams as necessary on Implement Management of Change (MOC) programs and principles, as necessary.
  • Reviews equipment design, installations, and modifications to ensure that all EHS requirements are addressed.
  • Be the focal point for the site for all Governmental regulatory contacts and inquiries.
  • Responsible for management of all employee medical surveillance programs and other requirements per the OSHA Lead Standard 1910.1025.

 Training & Development

  • Defines and manages the EHS training needs for all site associates and contractors. Ensures all training is completed according to established training plan.
  • Defines and manages the training needs for EHS personnel and develops an associated training plan.
  • Facilitate/participate in employee driven Safety Committees with representatives from all production departments, Union members, and Supervisory and Management Staff.   
  • Participates in EHS professional organizations and networks to foster new learning and best practices / technology information sharing, as well as stay abreast of all regulatory changes.
  • Communicates with EHS professionals in other plants on a regular basis to share best practices and ensure consistency in practices.

 Auditing and Management Systems

  • Tracks and publishes standardized EHS performance and cultural metrics on a routine basis consistent with company requirements and aligns EHS performance indicators with overall business key performance indicators. Tracks these metrics versus established standards and identifies and implements needed initiatives for continuous improvement.
  • Administers, plans, coordinates, and executes company adopted EHS management systems. Responsible for ensuring the site complies and meets deadlines on all management systems as necessary.
  • Conduct periodic self-audits of site EHS policies, procedures, practices, and documentation to ensure compliance with all regulatory and corporate expectations. 
  • Conduct risk assessments and Job Safety Analysis Studies on an on-going basis to identify and reduce occupation exposures.
  • Serve as the focal point to coordinate all internal or external EHS audits that are conducted on site. Ensure all audit findings are closed and recommendations are implemented in a timely manner.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Safety, Environment, Chemical or Environmental Engineering or equivalent.
  • Minimum of 10 years’ experience as an EHS professional, with a minimum of 3 years’ experience in both Environmental and Safety roles.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and application of State and Federal air, water, and waste regulations.
  • Ability to work in multi-tasking environment.
  • Ability to effectively communicate and interact with all levels of the organization
  • Ability to lead and influence project teams.
  • Ability to positively influence hourly and salaried associates
  • Must be able to effectively recognize the need for and be able to lead positive change.
  • Must have a strong track record of delivering results.
  • Must have the ability to lead and make decisions in stressful situations.
  • Must be willing to support community outreach and communication programs as necessary.
  • Must be available to come in to plant at any time of the day or night.
  • 10 – 15% travel may be expected.

Addition Requirements

  • Demonstrated experience in developing and implementing an Environmental compliance program in a manufacturing plant with significant industrial exposures.
  • Demonstrated experience in developing and implementing an Occupational Safety compliance program in a manufacturing environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and implement management systems and compliance programs.
  • CSP and/or IH Certification a plus.
  • Experience in work environments with lead exposures is preferred.
