Position Overview:
We are seeking an experienced and highly skilled engineer to join our dynamic team. The engineer will play a key role in advancing our data-driven decision-making capabilities by designing, developing, and delivering scalable analytics solutions that support business and investment decisions. This position requires a strong analytical mindset, advanced proficiency in data visualization and business intelligence tools, and the ability to translate complex business requirements into effective technical solutions.
The engineer will report to the Data Services and Engineering Director and will partner with staff throughout the organization to deliver timely and actionable insights by leveraging BI tools such as Power BI. This role will also help establish reporting standards, promote best practices, and support the continued evolution of the organization’s engineering capabilities.
Essential activities:
- Partner with teams across the agency to develop reports, dashboards, and analytical solutions that meet business and investment needs. Drive, document, and understand complex requirements and translate them into scalable and effective reporting solutions.
- Design and develop impactful and insightful reports using Power BI. Ensure reports are accurate, performant, visually effective, intuitive, and aligned with business objectives and organizational standards.
- Provide technical guidance on architecture, data modeling, DAX development, SQL, visualization standards, performance optimization, testing, and deployment practices.
- Foster a culture of continuous improvement and innovation in engineering practices. Stay current on reporting, analytics, and business intelligence trends and industry best practices. Drive enhancements that improve usability, effectiveness, scalability, maintainability, and data governance.
- Provide support for issues and questions. Troubleshoot and resolve complex reporting, data, and performance challenges to ensure uninterrupted access to critical business insights.
- Develop and support automated testing, reconciliation, monitoring, and data quality processes to improve the accuracy and reliability of reports and analytical solutions.
- Validate and critically review AI-generated code, queries, analysis, and documentation to ensure accuracy, security, maintainability, and compliance with organizational standards.
- Maintain comprehensive documentation of solutions, technical designs, business logic, processes, incidents, and resolutions. Ensure documentation supports troubleshooting, knowledge transfer, and consistency in reporting practices.
- Validate and critically review AI-generated code, queries, analysis, and documentation to ensure accuracy, security, maintainability, and compliance with organizational standards.
- Adhere to and promote best practices in data visualization, accessibility, security, development, and deployment when designing and publishing solutions. Ensure compliance with agency standards and data governance policies.
- Support the implementation and enhancement of automated deployment processes using Continuous Integration and Continuous Deployment (CI/CD) techniques.
- Mentor and support other team members through technical guidance, knowledge sharing, and solution reviews.
The ideal candidate:
- Demonstrates a proactive attitude toward enabling business and investment decision-making through insightful, scalable, and reliable reporting and dashboard solutions.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to communicate complex technical concepts to technical and non-technical audiences.
- Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Business Administration, Computer Science, Information Systems, Data Analytics, Engineering, or a related field.
- Advanced experience using Power BI.
- Experience using generative AI or AI-assisted development tools to support software development, data analysis, documentation, troubleshooting, or other technical workflows.
- Ability to effectively prompt, evaluate, validate, and refine AI-generated outputs rather than relying on generated results without technical review.
- 6+ years of experience designing, developing, deploying, and maintaining analytical solutions.
- General knowledge of and interest in the investment industry.
- Direct experience in the financial services, investment management, or asset management industry.
- Strong experience with data modeling, DAX (Data Analysis Expressions), and SQL querying for data manipulation, analysis, and integration within reporting solutions.
- Experience designing scalable semantic models and integrating data from multiple enterprise data sources.
- Experience implementing testing tools, automated validation, reconciliation, and data quality metrics and processes to ensure the accuracy and reliability of supported reports.
- Proficient in conducting complex data analysis, interpreting financial information, and presenting insights to support business and investment decision-making.
- Experience deploying reports utilizing automated processes and Continuous Integration and Continuous Deployment (CI/CD) techniques.
- Experience deploying and supporting solutions using cloud providers such as Azure.
- Experience with development standards, code review practices, testing methodologies, and software development lifecycle principles.
- Experience providing technical guidance or mentoring other reporting and analytics professionals.
- Experience with Snowflake as a data source is a plus.
- PL-300 Microsoft Power BI Data Analyst Associate Certification is preferred.
- CFA or CAIA designation is a plus.

Pursuant to our Hybrid Remote Work Policy, all staff have the flexibility to work remotely but are required to have a weekly presence in our offices, the frequency of which is dependent on their distance from office or the job position. Staff are not required to reside locally; however, we offer relocation reimbursement to the Dane County area per our policy.
