Mechanical Design Engineer 

Location: New Mills, Wotton-under-Edge, South Gloucestershire 

up to £38,000 depending on experience

Renishaw's Machine Tool Products Division is a world leader in the design, development, and manufacture of inspection probe technology and metrology systems for precision-machined components. We are seeking a Mechanical Design Engineer to join our Mechanical Design Team at our global headquarters in South Gloucestershire. 

Our design team is responsible for transforming product requirements into robust, validated engineering solutions. Working closely with cross-functional teams, we balance performance, manufacturability, cost, quality, and sustainability considerations to deliver innovative products that meet the needs of our customers and the business. The successful candidate will contribute to the development of new machine tool probes, interfaces, sensors, and early-stage research activities. 

 

The Role 

As a Mechanical Design Engineer, you will: 

• Translate product requirements into innovative concepts and production-ready designs. 

• Produce supporting engineering calculations, analyses, and technical documentation. 

• Create, manage, and control 3D models, assemblies, Bills of Materials (BOMs), and detailed drawings. 

• Apply sound engineering principles to develop robust and reliable design solutions. 

• Collaborate with manufacturing, quality, procurement, and other engineering disciplines to ensure designs are optimised for manufacture and assembly (DFM/DFA). 

• Support New Product Introduction (NPI) activities and design effective production assembly tooling. 

• Contribute to design simplification, standardisation, and cost reduction through value engineering principles. 

• Participate in product verification reviews to ensure designs meet performance and reliability requirements. Support the product development team developing targeted test strategies. 

 

Key Requirements 

• A practical, hands-on approach to engineering and problem-solving. 

• A positive attitude, strong work ethic, and willingness to learn. 

• Degree qualification in Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline. Other qualifications will be considered including HND when supported by proven experience. 

• Good understanding of mechanical engineering fundamentals. 

• Awareness of engineering materials, their properties, and appropriate applications. 

• Experience using 3D CAD software to create and manage parts, assemblies, BOMs, and detailed drawings (Siemens NX preferred). 

• Ability to work effectively within a multi-disciplinary engineering team. 

• Understanding of Finite Element Analysis (FEA) and its application to engineering problems. 

• Understanding of the relationship between product design, manufacturing processes, and assembly. 

 

Desirable Requirements 

• Experience within a mechanical product design environment. 

• Knowledge of industrial measurement and their applications. 

• Understanding of the product development lifecycle and New Product Introduction processes. 

• Good knowledge of mechanical fundamentals, including free body diagrams, statics, bending, and torsion theory. 

• Experience creating and interpreting Finite Element Analysis models and results (ANSYS preferred). 

• Understanding of materials including stainless steels, heat-treated ferrous materials, aluminium alloys, cermet’s, ceramics and injection moulding. 

• Demonstrated problem-solving skills with the ability to identify root causes and implement effective solutions. 

• Ability to build strong working relationships and collaborate across different functions within the business.
