Description of Work

The Digital Strategy Manager provides strategic leadership for the web presence of the Division of State History Museums, with responsibility for developing, coordinating, and advancing web strategy across the Division’s statewide network of museums.

The position establishes a cohesive approach to the Division’s digital presence that supports the individual missions, audiences, programs, and priorities of the North Carolina Museum of History and regional museums while promoting consistency in user experience, accessibility, visual identity, content standards, and digital best practices.

The Digital Strategy Manager serves as the Division’s primary subject-matter expert for web strategy and digital experience. The position develops web standards and governance practices, identifies opportunities for improvement, coordinates cross-divisional web initiatives, and provides guidance and consultation to museum and program staff responsible for website content.

The position works closely with the Communications Director, Public Relations & Marketing Strategist, Digital Content Strategist, Web Editor, editorial staff, graphic designers, museum leadership, and staff throughout the Division to ensure that web strategy supports broader communications, marketing, education, exhibition, and audience engagement goals.

Key Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

· Develops and maintains a comprehensive web strategy for the Division of State History Museums, establishing a clear vision for the Division’s statewide digital presence.
· Ensures web strategy supports institutional priorities, audience development goals, museum missions, and broader Communications & Public Engagement strategies.
· Establishes web governance standards, policies, workflows, and best practices for use across the Division.
· Provides strategic direction for the Division’s websites and digital experiences, including the North Carolina Museum of History and regional museum websites.
· Establishes standards for information architecture, navigation, content organization, page structures, and user experience across Division websites.
· Develops and coordinates Division-wide SEO strategies to improve the discoverability of museum content and resources.

Recruitment Range: $56,772.00 - $73,613.00

Candidates meet the minimum qualifications of this position if they meet the minimum education and experience listed on the vacancy announcement.   • Demonstrated experience developing and implementing web or digital strategies across multiple websites, departments, locations, or organizational units.

  • Strong knowledge of website strategy, content management systems, information architecture, user experience, and digital governance.

  • Demonstrated experience leading digital projects involving multiple stakeholders without direct supervisory authority.

  • Strong communication, collaboration, facilitation, and problem-solving skills.

  • Ability to translate organizational and audience needs into clear digital strategies and priorities.

Position/Physical Requirements

  • Must be available to work the schedule of Monday - Friday 8:00am - 5:00pm with occasional evening or weekend work required.

  • Must be able to sit for extended periods of sedentary computer use, strategic planning, analysis, meetings, writing, and communication with internal and external stakeholders.

  • Must be able to occasionally travel throughout North Carolina to visit Division museums, meet with staff, participate in digital projects, and support statewide initiatives.

This position is deemed eligible for hybrid telework under DNCR’s Telework Policy.

Minimum Education and Experience

Bachelor's degree in web development/design, digital design, computer programming, or related curriculum from an appropriately accredited institution;

OR

Associate degree in web development/design, digital design, computer programming

AND

one year of experience related to the design and development of websites;

OR

High school or General Educational Development (GED) diploma

AND

four years of experience in the field of technology related to the position's role;

OR

an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Section/Unit Description

The Communications & Public Engagement Section supports the Division’s mission by developing and delivering strategic communications, marketing, public relations, digital content, and audience engagement initiatives. The Section strengthens the Division’s statewide presence, builds awareness and participation, and creates consistent, accessible, and engaging experiences for audiences across the Division’s museums and digital platforms.

The Division of State History Museums (DSHM) preserves, interprets, and shares the history and material culture of North Carolina through museums, exhibitions, collections, educational programs, publications, and community engagement. Veteran’s and National Guard Preference
