Job Description:
The Sandra Day O'Connor College of Law at Arizona State University seeks an energetic, creative and team-oriented individual for the Communications Specialist role. As part of the strategic Marketing and Communications team at ASU Law, this position primarily supports the college's social media and storytelling efforts by planning and creating engaging content, capturing photos and video, drafting and scheduling social media posts, and identifying and writing compelling stories for the ASU Law Newsroom. The Communications Specialist works collaboratively with faculty, staff, students, alumni and other partners to tell stories that advance student recruitment, strengthen the college's reputation, promote strategic priorities and foster engagement with key audiences.
Salary Range: $50,000 - $55,000 per year; DOE
Essential Duties:
Advances ASU Law's priorities and department objectives of student recruitment, positive reputation, strategic plan promotion and fostering fruitful partnerships through communications.
Plans, develops and writes creative, high-quality communications for graduate-level college audiences (e.g., faculty, staff, students, donors, prospective students and the general public) using multiple digital communications mediums, with a primary focus on social media and newsroom storytelling.
Helps develop and maintain the college's social media content calendar; plans and schedules content aligned with college priorities, events, campaigns, news and audience interests.
Creates content, both visual and written, for ASU Law social media channels, including drafting copy, taking photos, filming video and developing creative concepts for social-first storytelling.
Attends events and programs to capture photos and video and conduct real-time social media promotion and coverage as needed.
Manages day-to-day posting, updating and monitoring of ASU Law social media channels and helps maintain a visible, professional and engaging presence across platforms including Instagram, LinkedIn, Facebook, YouTube, TikTok and other emerging channels.
Monitors the social media landscape and related trends, researches new content formats and platform best practices, and proactively recommends creative opportunities to strengthen audience engagement.
Uses social media monitoring and analytics tools to track performance and provide regular updates and insights that inform future content planning.
Serves as an in-house reporter for the college to seek stories and craft compelling articles. Provides ideas and proactively conducts outreach to faculty, administration, students and alumni to tell their stories.
Interviews faculty, students, alumni and other sources and writes articles, announcements, web copy and other content for the ASU Law Newsroom and related communications channels.
Identifies timely and compelling story opportunities across the college and adapts newsroom and long-form content for social media and other digital channels.
Engages with marketing and communications representatives across ASU academic and business units to source content and identify opportunities to amplify ASU Law stories.
Supports media relations efforts by assisting with media inquiries, coordinating interviews with faculty and leadership, identifying opportunities for media outreach, maintaining media contacts and tracking media coverage.
Occasionally supports email communications through Salesforce, including drafting and editing copy, building and scheduling emails and newsletters, testing and proofreading communications, and reviewing basic performance metrics.
Works together with other Marketing and Communications team members to ensure the success of various projects and integrated communications efforts.
Promotes a culture of innovation, empowerment and teamwork.
Performs other duties as assigned to support the goals of the college and department.
Desired Qualifications:
Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively across a variety of formats, with experience in writing, editing, and storytelling.
Degree in Journalism, English, Communications, Marketing, Education or a related field
Experience in the development of comprehensive and creative communication
Certificates from recognized programs that verify mastery of tools and techniques relevant to the assignment.
Working use of AP style.
Skilled in organization, attention to detail and accuracy.
Experience being an organized problem solver who can take initiative, manage competing priorities and remain flexible.
Demonstrated experience creating and executing social media content for an organization or brand.
Demonstrated knowledge of social media platforms, audiences, formats and usage standards.
Experience capturing photos and video and creating short-form content for social and digital channels.
Experience interviewing sources and writing articles, profiles, announcements or other newsroom-style content.
Experience using social media scheduling, monitoring and analytics tools.
Experience supporting email newsletters or other digital communications.
Experience supporting media relations, public relations or earned media activities.
Ability to work in an environment subject to quickly changing priorities and tight deadlines.
Skilled in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships.
Demonstrated experience working in a higher education and/or executive environment.
Familiarity with Microsoft Office suite (or equivalent), Google Suite and commonly used web browsers.
Familiarity with the ASU brand style guide preferred.
A portfolio or work samples demonstrating social media content, writing, photography and/or video storytelling is preferred.
Working Environment:
Activities are performed in an environmentally controlled office setting subject to extended periods of sitting, keyboarding and manipulating a computer mouse.
Required to stand for varying lengths of time and walk moderate distances to perform work.
Frequent bending, reaching, lifting, pushing and pulling up to 25 pounds.
Regular activities require the ability to quickly change priorities, which may include and/or be subject to resolution of conflicts.
Ability to effectively communicate, receive, interpret, and convey information in a variety of formats to perform essential job functions.
Physical presence at the workplace is an essential function or requirement of this job.
