POSITION SUMMARY:
Reporting to the Manager Truckload Operations, the Senior Logistics Specialist – Outbound Carrier Management is responsible for overseeing daily outbound transportation operations while strategically managing carrier performance, cost, and service. This role serves as a subject matter expert for outbound freight execution, carrier relationships, and continuous improvement initiatives that ensure on‑time delivery, cost optimization, and compliance across the network.
The ideal candidate brings strong analytical skills, deep understanding of carrier management, and the ability to influence internal stakeholders and external partners.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in supply chain, Logistics, Business, or related field (or equivalent experience).
- 5+ years of experience in transportation or logistics, with a strong focus on outbound carrier management.
- Proven experience managing common carriers, brokers, parcel, LTL, and/or TL freight.
- Strong analytical skills with experience interpreting freight and performance data.
- Proficiency with TMS platforms and Microsoft Excel.
- Negotiation skills for contract management with carriers and service providers.
- Microsoft Office products (i.e. Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Access, etc.)
Job Responsibilities:
Outbound Transportation & Carrier Management
- Manage all aspects of outbound freight movement, including carrier selection, routing, and tendering.
- Develop and maintain strong relationships with core carriers, brokers, and 3PL partners.
- Monitor carrier performance metrics (OTIF, transit time, claims, capacity commitments).
- Lead carrier performance reviews and corrective action plans.
- Peak season capacity planning
- Bid compliance
- Development of primary and backup carrier networks
Cost Control & Optimization
- Analyze freight spend and identify cost‑saving opportunities through mode optimization, consolidation, and routing improvements.
- Support or lead carrier sourcing events, RFPs, and contract negotiations.
- Ensure adherence to contractual rates and accessorial guidelines.
- Partner with finance to validate freight invoices and resolve discrepancies.
Service & Execution
- Ensure timely and accurate execution of outbound shipments to meet customer service expectations.
- Proactively manage exceptions, disruptions, and high‑priority shipments.
- Escalate service failures and coordinate recovery plans.
Data, Systems & Reporting
- Utilize TMS and other logistics systems to manage shipments, track performance, and generate reports.
- Analyze transportation data to identify trends, risks, and improvement opportunities.
- Prepare regular dashboards and management reports on service, cost, and carrier performance.
- Manage and maintain carrier scorecards and QBRs
Cross‑Functional Collaboration
- Partner with warehouse operations, customer service, procurement, and planning teams to align transportation strategy with business needs.
- Provide guidance and training to junior logistics staff as subject matter expert.
- Support network changes, new customer onboarding, and volume shifts.
Compliance & Continuous Improvement
- Ensure compliance with DOT, safety, and company transportation policies.
- Drive continuous improvement initiatives focused on service reliability, cost efficiency, and scalability.
- Participate in or lead process redesigns and standardization efforts.
