Jefferson Health –Thomas Jefferson University Hospitals is currently recruiting a Chief Operating Officer to oversee operations across 3 hospitals (800+ beds) including a 632 beds academic medical center providing Level 1 trauma services, complex quaternary care and training programs for over 970 residents and fellows with over 600 employed and aligned physicians and 9,000 employees. Reporting to the Central Region President this strategic leader will be responsible for developing and implementing the annual operating plan to drive key performance outcomes, overseeing day-to-day operations and working closely with regional leadership to execute strategic goals and objectives.

Job Description


Responsible for providing comprehensive executive oversight for financial performance, and resource allocation of multiple hospital locations, ensuring full integration with the organization's long-term strategic plan. This leader will drive the development of high-quality, cost-effective clinical programs and foster deep collaboration across clinical departments, medical staff, and affiliate organizations to fulfill clinical, research, and educational objectives. Responsible for oversight ensuring strict operational compliance with Joint Commission and Department of Health standards. Additionally, the COO will lead workforce planning, align staffing metrics with patient volumes, and mentor direct reports to cultivate a highly engaged, patient- and family-centered environment that actively identifies new avenues for revenue growth and business alignment.

Job Duties

  • Oversight management of the profit and loss statement as well as the related resources associated with the hospital operation including responsibility for integrating the strategic plan of the organization with the operations. Oversight for the development of high quality, cost effective and integrated clinical programs within the hospital.
  • Develop and foster effective collaboration between clinical departments, divisions, medical staff leadership, faculty and other affiliated services (inside and outside of the hospital) to ensure an integrated approach to providing services, and fulfilling the hospital's clinical, research and educational goals and objectives.
  • Supervises operational leaders at designated facilities, removing barriers to execution, escalating key decisions as appropriate, and providing resources to enable service delivery.
  • Develops the annual operating plan and implements project plans with multidisciplinary teams to achieve key performance indicators (KPIs), Operational Improvement (OI) initiatives, and Transformational Initiatives (TIs) within the assigned region. Cascades KPIs and goals to physician leaders, managers, and frontline staff to enable alignment. Applies change management techniques to achieve results.
  • Ensures the development and maintenance of policies and procedures relevant to operations in accordance with Joint Commission and Department of Health requirements. Applies standardized Enterprise and/or regional policies as applicable to ensure standardization and integration. Communicates new policies or policy revisions to key personnel.
  • Leads the workforce planning process and deploys systems and processes to align staffing with the budget, volumes, productivity, and patient acuity. Uses benchmarking tools to monitor staffing and manages staffing levels to the appropriate Enterprise labor productivity policies. Approves new position requests, including physicians and advanced practice providers, following financial review.
  • Develops and guides direct reports to increase performance and engagement and ensure a strong team orientated environment.
  • Ensures the organizational vision, values, goals, and objectives are transformed into daily operations resulting high quality outcomes in an efficient, effective, and patient and family centered environment.
  • Works collaboratively with the medical staff, nursing leadership, and clinical/financial/ operational leaders to deliver cost effective, high quality clinical services and outcomes in partnership with affiliate organizations and providers that optimize the delivery of patient care.
  • Identifies opportunities to grow the business, enhance revenue, and align with key physicians and groups. Implements appropriate action plans with regional leadership team.


Minimum Qualifications

  • Master’s Degree Business, Healthcare Administration, or related field
  • 10 years of progressive management experience in a hospital/healthcare environment with exposure to matrix operating structures and experience with program development. Includes direct executive-level management of multiple departments, including functional strategic and financial planning.
  • Demonstrating business acumen. Demonstrates working knowledge of market, economic, legal and regulatory environments and how they impact the business.
  • Managing stakeholders. Builds relationships and takes account of the needs of multiple stakeholders to influence and drive decisions for beneficial business outcomes.
  • Providing Leadership. Makes decisions and takes responsibility; directs and leads others, coordinating activities; provides encouragement and inspiration to help others succeed.

  • Structuring Tasks. Plans work and sets clear priorities; upholds ethical standards and fulfills commitments while maintaining high levels of work output.
  • Processing Details. Ensures projects are completed on time by keeping work on schedule; works on tasks thoroughly and produces high quality work; follows rules and established processes, minimizing risks.


Additional Qualifications

  • Highly developed leadership and interpersonal skills; regulatory, financial analysis and business planning skills. Excellent communication and presentation skills, both verbal and written.
  • Knowledge and command of the principles of financial analysis, planning, operations, and human resources. Strong metrics-driven performance improvement background is important, as is the ability to coach leaders to higher levels of accountability and execution.
  • The ability to use data to create accountability structures to drive success and accumulate and analyze appropriate data and formulate actionable plans with staff to achieve goals.
  • Demonstrated leadership and complex organizational management skills and an understanding of how to achieve results in an academic environment.
  • Well-developed planning, marketing, organizational development, and business skills.
  • Experience in hospital administration in a large and complex setting and sensitivity for and understanding of academic disciplines and issues.
  • The ability to work with physicians, staff and professionals in multiple settings and locations and to promote diversity in the workplace.
  • Information systems capabilities and an appreciation for the data which will be required to make meaningful management decisions. Negotiation and financial analysis skills.
  • Confidence to represent the TJUH hospitals and Jefferson Health in formal and informal settings. Demonstrated ability to collect, analyze and apply data and other pertinent information to develop short and long-term goals. Proactively searches.


Physical Demands
Lift and carry 25 lbs. frequent sitting/standing, frequent keyboard use, *patient care providers may be required to perform activities specific to their role including kneeling, bending, squatting and performing CPR.
