Description

Location: NAS Patuxent River, MD

Security Clearance Requirement:  Secret with the ability to obtain a Top Secret clearance.

Telework Eligible? No, work will be performed 100% on-site.

What You’ll Do:

As the Senior Avionics Systems Engineer, you will support work within NAVAIR's Airborne Strategic Command, Control and Communications Program Office, PMA-271. In this role, you will work closely with the Integrated Product Team (IPT) engineers to drive development, acquisition, certification, modernization, and sustainment of critical mission systems.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Performing research and evaluation to support certification for essential avionics systems for PMA-271 platforms, specifically SATCOM, HF, VLF, UHF, and IP Line-of-Sight throughout all acquisition and sustainment phases.
  • Directing the development and execution of cosite mitigation strategies and Simultaneous Operations (SIMOP) plans for diverse communication bands.
  • Guiding the execution and sustainment of avionics Non-Recurring Engineering (NRE) initiatives for PMA-271.
  • Creating, updating, and monitoring Plans of Action and Milestones (POA&M) essential for the certification efforts of HF, COMSEC, and SATCOM systems.
  • Directing and overseeing all avionics certification activities, ensuring alignment with both mission readiness objectives and compliance requirements.
  • Reviewing and providing guidance related to requirements definition, analysis, verification, and certification, alongside architecture design.
  • Managing the creation and quality of engineering documentation and technical artifacts.
  • Leading Systems Engineering Technical Review (SETR) events and Program Management Reviews (PMRs).
  • Conducting functional analysis, timeline analysis, and comprehensive trade studies to translate customer requirements into practical, cost-effective solutions.
  • Presenting technical progress and findings, delivering actionable recommendations to NAVAIR program office stakeholders.
  • Position will require up to 25% travel.

This description outlines the general nature and scope of the role. Additional duties may be assigned as necessary.

What You’ll Bring:

Required Qualifications:

  • Minimum of 5 years of relevant NAVAIR Systems Engineering experience within a NAVAIR Program Management Activity (PMA).
  • Hands-on experience in the NAVAIR environment creating and maturing Engineering Change Proposals (ECPs) through technical review and approval processes.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 10 years of experience leading new development or modifications to existing mission avionics systems — from drafting Requests for Proposals (RFPs) and awarding development contracts, through Engineering Development, Review & Approval Process (EDRAP), to full flight clearance integration and production contract execution.

Equally Important:

  • Ability to build positive, collaborative relationships across teams and with external partners.
  • Effective communicator with strong verbal and written skills.
  • Proactive, self-directed work style with the ability to operate independently.
  • Analytical thinker with proven problem-solving capabilities.
  • Highly organized, with the ability to balance competing priorities in a fast-paced environment.
