A Brief Overview
Reporting directly to the Bermuda Chief Financial Officer, the Financial Controller – Bermuda Operations is responsible for leading legal entity financial reporting, statutory reporting, regulatory reporting, internal control oversight, audit coordination, and management and Board reporting for RGA's Bermuda operations. The role ensures timely, accurate and well-controlled reporting under applicable GAAP, Bermuda statutory, regulatory and internal management requirements, while partnering with local and global Finance, Actuarial, Risk, Compliance, Tax, Treasury and business stakeholders. The position also supports finance transformation, process improvement, governance, and other strategic finance projects aligned with RGA's global standards and Bermuda regulatory expectations.
What you will do
- Statutory and Regulatory Reporting: Lead preparation, review and coordination of annual and quarterly materials required for submissions to the Bermuda Monetary Authority, Registrar of Companies and other applicable regulatory or governmental bodies. Including Bermuda Statutory Financial Statements, Economic Balance Sheet, BSCR model, FCR, QFRs, Economic Substance Return and associated materials.
- Financial Reporting and Close: Working with the Legal Entity Reporting & Compliance team, review of the annual and quarterly US GAAP financial statements process for assigned Bermuda legal entities, including reporting, analytical reviews, variance analysis and supporting schedules.
- Board and Management Reporting: Prepare, review and deliver clear, accurate and insightful financial reporting packages, management reports, Board materials and committee papers for senior leadership, entity management and Boards of Directors of RGA’s Bermuda registered legal entities.
- Internal Controls and Governance: Oversee and strengthen internal controls over financial reporting, including design, documentation, execution, review and remediation of controls consistent with RGA enterprise standards, applicable accounting requirements and Bermuda governance expectations.
- Audit Management: Assist with coordination and management of external audit activities for assigned entities, including audit planning, information requests, issue resolution, management representation support, statutory audit deliverables and timely completion of audited financial statements.
- Stakeholder Coordination: Work closely with local and global Legal Entity Reporting & Compliance, Actuarial, Investments, Investment Accounting, Risk, Compliance, Tax, Treasury, Legal, Structured Finance, Internal Audit and other relevant business teams to ensure consistent reporting, complete documentation, timely issue escalation and effective resolution of technical accounting, statutory, regulatory and operational matters.
- Finance Projects and Process Improvement: Lead or support finance projects, including reporting enhancements, control improvements, system or process changes, new business or transaction support, regulatory change implementation and other initiatives supporting the Bermuda finance operating model.
- People and Team Leadership: Provide direction, coaching and review support to finance team members and cross-functional contributors, promoting accountability, collaboration, technical quality, continuous improvement and a strong control mindset.
- Other Duties: Maintain regular and predictable attendance, keep abreast of relevant accounting, regulatory and industry developments, and perform other duties as assigned.
Required Skills:
- Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, business administration or related field.
- Professional accounting qualifications, such as CPA, CA, ACCA or equivalent.
- 7+ years of combined post-qualification public accounting, insurance/reinsurance accounting, audit, financial reporting, statutory reporting or legal entity reporting experience.
- 5+ years of prior regulatory reporting experience within the Bermuda insurance or reinsurance industry, including familiarity with Bermuda Monetary Authority reporting requirements, statutory financial statements, BSCR, FCR, CISSA and related reporting frameworks.
- 3+ years’ experience working in a financial reporting role at a Bermuda-registered Class D or Class E Long Term Insurer or Reinsurer.
- Demonstrated experience preparing and/or reviewing quarterly Board, management, regulatory or senior leadership reporting materials.
- Working knowledge of internal control frameworks over financial reporting, including control documentation, evidence standards, review procedures and remediation tracking.
- Advanced knowledge of accounting, financial reporting, statutory reporting, legal entity reporting, analytical review, and variance explanation concepts.
- Advanced knowledge of Bermuda Monetary Authority requirements for a Bermuda insurer or reinsurer, including statutory financial statements, BSCR, FCR, CISSA, LLSBA and related reporting frameworks.
- Strong risk and control mindset, with the ability to identify reporting risks, design or improve controls, evaluate evidence and drive remediation.
- Advanced analytical, investigative and problem-solving skills, including ability to interpret complex data and translate findings into clear conclusions and action plans.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to prepare Board-ready and senior-management-ready materials.
- Ability to build effective relationships and influence stakeholders across local, regional and global teams.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities, deadlines, stakeholders, and deliverables in a dynamic regulated environment.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to accuracy, completeness, documentation quality, and audit readiness.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Excel (including advanced formula usage), Word, PowerPoint, SharePoint, Teams and OneDrive.
- Experience with PeopleSoft, OneStream, Workiva, Power BI or similar general ledger, consolidation, reporting or workflow tools.
- Demonstrated accountability, professional judgment, integrity, and ability to maintain confidentiality.
Preferred Skills:
- Master’s degree in accounting, finance, business administration or related field.
- Familiarity with SOX controls frameworks as applied to financial reporting.
- Experience leading finance projects, reporting transformation, control enhancement initiatives or cross-functional process improvements.
- Prior people management or team leadership experience.
- Experience of reporting to and presenting at Board or Senior Executive and management meetings on financial reporting matters.
- Knowledge of life, health, or annuity insurance products.
- Knowledge of BMA’s Scenario-Based-Approach (SBA) methodology and reporting requirements.
- Understanding of Bermuda’s Economic Substance rules and requirements.
