What We Can Achieve Together:

The Facilities Technician participates in and leads work teams to ensure the coordination of facilities maintenance and preserve management plans. The Facilities Technician maintains preserve areas frequented by the visiting public, maintains tools, equipment and the VCR shop, maintains several VCR facilities, assists with fleet (vehicle and boat) maintenance, may operate heavy machinery, and maintains roads, driveways and trails within the VCR.

We’re Looking for You:

  • Weekly, monthly and/or frequent checks of all VCR facilities including the office, Brownsville House, Volgenau Cottage, Roger’s Drive House, Box Tree, Ravenswood, Oyster Platform, Marine Restoration Center.  This may include replacing filters, bulbs; leading and/or coordinating needed repairs; spraying parking lots, driveways; painting, sheet rock work, woodwork, repairing/replacing locks, repairing/replacing gates, repairing water leaks, toilets, sinks, receptacles, breakers; checking to make sure all receptacles and breakers are working.

  • Assist VCR Facilities Manager/Captain with routine boat maintenance including inspections, trailers, tires, lights as needed.

  • Assist VCR Facilities Manager/Captain with routine vehicle fleet maintenance including inspections, oil changes, tire rotations, air filters as needed.

  • Assist VCR Facilities Manager/Captain with shop organization to include small equipment, tools and workspace.

  • Assist with Brownsville Preserve road, driveway and trail maintenance.

  • Assist VCR staff with special event planning and prep as needed.

  • Assist with any special, contracted projects (i.e. large painting and/or maintenance) as needed.

  • May monitor work groups consisting of staff, interns, and volunteers

  • Networks with diverse groups, including other VCR staff, landowners, conservation partners, government officials, donors, board members and the general public to recruit support for the Conservancy and publicize Conservancy programs/preserves.  

  • May work under minimal and/or distant supervision; may make some independent decisions based on analysis, experience and context.  

  • May work in variable weather conditions, at remote locations, on difficult and hazardous terrain and under physically demanding circumstances.

What You’ll Bring:

  • AS/Technical or vocational degree in science-related field and 1-year related experience in custodial and ecological land management or similar field or equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Experience with carpentry, plumbing, vehicle and boat maintenance, using small and large equipment.

  • Experience working as part of a dynamic team

  • Experience with natural systems.                    

  • Experience operating and repairing various types of equipment and machinery.

Desired Qualifications

  • Multi-lingual skills and multi-cultural or cross-cultural experience appreciated. 
  • 1 – 2 years related experience in custodial and ecological land management or equivalent combination of education and experience.  
  • Some experience managing volunteers or entry level staff.
  • Knowledge/understanding of current trends and practices in conservation, land management and natural resource preservation/conservation or similar field. 
  • Ability to complete tasks independently with respect to timeline(s).
  • Working knowledge of common software applications (e.g.; Word, Excel, Web browsers).  
  • Communicating clearly via written, spoken and graphical means in English and other relevant languages.

This position requires a valid driver's license and compliance with TNC’s Auto Safety Program. Employees may not drive Conservancy-owned/leased vehicles, rental cars, or personal vehicles on behalf of the Conservancy if considered "high risk drivers." Employment in this position will be contingent upon completion of a Vehicle Use Agreement, which may include a review of the prospective employee's motor vehicle record.

Salary Information:

The starting pay range for a candidate selected for this position is generally within the range of $24.50 - $27.50 per hour. This range only applies to candidates whose country of employment is the USA. Where a successful candidate’s actual pay will fall within this range will be based on a variety of factors, including, for example, the candidate's location, qualifications, specific skills, and experience. Please note countries outside the USA would have a different pay range in the local currency based on the local labor market, and not tied to USA pay or ranges. Your geographic location will be confirmed during the recruitment.
