Summary

The Duke Energy Nuclear Fleet Corporate Design Engineering (CDE) department is the Design Authority for each of Duke Energy’s six nuclear sites. CDE is responsible for the execution of a fleet portfolio that includes design solutions supporting risk reduction, equipment obsolescence, and plant modernization. The Oconee Nuclear Station (ONS) CDE team manages the capital engineering change portfolio at the ONS site in Seneca, SC. The ONS CDE Electrical Team is seeking to fill the position of Electrical Design Engineer I or II.

Responsibilities

• Develop the scope, technical basis, installation, and testing requirements for engineering design changes that include but are not limited to AC power systems, DC power systems, Large AC motors, Transformers, Switchgear, Motor Control Centers, Protective Relaying, Voltage Regulators, Breakers, etc.

• Research engineering and design issues, evaluate alternatives, determine, and present recommendations to resolve issues.

• Provide ongoing support of assigned engineering design changes through work order reviews, corrective action program assignments, and field installation support activities.

• Develop or revise design specifications or technical requirements documents to support engineering design changes.

• Develop or revise complex engineering calculations impacted by engineering design changes.

• Revise site design basis documents, design drawings, and regulatory documents impacted by engineering design changes.

Basic/Required Qualifications

The incumbent must meet the minimum ANSI requirements for this position identified within the scope of Nuclear Operating Fleet Administrative Procedure AD-LS-ALL-0011, Confirmation of Regulatory Guide 1.8 Personnel Qualifications

Note: This posting is for one open position. Dependent on relative experience, the level to which a candidate is aligned is outlined below. 

Electrical Design Engineer I

• Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an ABET accredited program.

• A Master 's degree in Engineering will be considered in lieu of a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering.

Electrical Design Engineer II

• Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an ABET accredited program.

• A Master 's degree in Engineering will be considered in lieu of a Bachelor of Science in Engineering

• Minimum of 2 years of engineering experience

• Minimum of 1 year of nuclear experience.

Preferred Qualifications

• Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from an ABET accredited program.

• Passing grade on the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) Exam.

• Interest in continued professional development and obtaining Professional Engineer (PE) licensure. 

• Experience in the utility industry, specifically the nuclear industry.

• Experience with nuclear industry standard design process.

• Working level knowledge of ETAP software program.

Specific Requirements

• In lieu of one year of nuclear experience, a selected candidate is subject to the oversight and written approval authority of a designated qualified individual until the selected candidate becomes fully qualified.

• Able to achieve nuclear site Unescorted Access/Security clearance.

• This position may be required to have Emergency Response Organization (ERO) responsibilities which could include callouts with a defined response time to the site and an on-call duty rotation requiring the employee to be Fit for Duty.

• Required to wear personal protective equipment (hardhat, safety glasses, fall protection, etc.) as needed.

• Additional hours expected during scheduled refueling outages.

• Occasional overnight travel.

Working Conditions

• Typically, an office environment with some work in the plant to conduct system walkdowns and field support of modification implementation.

• Hybrid Mobility Classification – Work will be performed from both remote and onsite locations after the onboarding period. However, hybrid employees must live within a reasonable commute to their designated Duke Energy facility, not greater than 50 miles one way. Employees are expected to report to their assigned Duke Energy facility as required and directed by their manager, on average 2 full workdays per regular workweek. The work week is Monday – Thursday, 10-hour days.
