Job Summary
The Research Assistant (RA) will work closely with the Principal Investigator(s) and members of the research team on the execution of multiple research studies related to traumatic brain injuries currently underway in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside community. The Research Assistant’s primary location is at the Research office, 219 Main Street, Vancouver. There may also be occasional travel to additional sites in the community, such as UBC Hospital. A Criminal Record Check will be required for this position.

Organizational Status
The Research Assistant will report directly to the Principal Investigator (PI) and/or the Research Coordinators. They will work in collaboration as a member of an interdisciplinary team with academic researchers at UBC and partner institutions.

Work Performed

Assists with the direct conduct of the research projects, including:

• Acts as first point of contact for the studies
• Participant recruitment
• Conduction of study visits, including obtaining consents, administering questionnaires and cognitive assessments
• Accompany participants to the UBC MRI unit
• Assisting with validation or cleaning of data, such as verifying that the electronic data matches the data on hard-copy forms, as well as looking for discrepancies in data-points
• Gathering and analyzing data, such as extracting data from clinical charts and performing elementary statistics (i.e. chi square tests)
• Maintaining accurate and complete research records
• Preparing written documents (e.g. editing and formatting grant and manuscript drafts, assisting with literature searches etc.)
• Maintaining effective communication with community partners.
• Assists with the updating and maintenance of research protocols
• Assists with the preparation, tracking, and submission of ethics applications
• Performs other related duties as required.

Consequence of Error/Judgement
All duties performed by the Research Assistant should adhere to policies of Good Clinical Practice, standard operating procedures, and UBC policies. Failure to comply with national, provincial, institutional, or ethical standards could result in significant consequences to the subjects, the study, the Principal Investigator, and the institution. Errors in judgment could harm the subjects, delay the progress of the study, result in loss of funding, or otherwise influence the integrity of clinical research. Non-routine decisions or actions should be deferred to the Research Coordinator.

Supervision Received
The Research Assistant will receive supervision from the Principal Investigators and/or the Research Coordinators.

Minimum Qualifications
High school graduation, some additional training in a related field and a minimum two years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Preferred Qualifications

·         No experience in research is required, but it is considered an asset;

·         Experience in a team environment, including well-developed interpersonal and communication skills;

·         Ability to work with people of diverse backgrounds, and be comfortable working in a variety of community environments, including acute care units in hospitals;

·         Ability to think critically, the willingness to learn and take initiative and they must be strongly self-directed;

·         Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
