The Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at The University of Kansas Medical Center provides evidence-based, patient-centered psychological care as a member of the interdisciplinary Parkinson’s and Movement Disorders Specialty team. The position provides assessment, treatment, psychoeducation, and triage for patients with mental health and behavioral health needs related to neurological and other chronic medical conditions, including psychological evaluation for patients preparing for neurosurgical procedures such as deep brain stimulation (DBS). This position is jointly employed by The University of Kansas Medical Center and The University of Kansas Health System and supports the clinical, educational, research, and service missions of both institutions.In addition to clinical responsibilities, the faculty member actively participates in the education and mentorship of learners and contributes to departmental academic activities through teaching, scholarly engagement, research collaboration, quality improvement, committee service, grand rounds, and other activities that advance the missions of the department and institution.
Job Description:
Job Duties:
- Provide psychological assessment, treatment, psychoeducation, and triage for patients with Parkinson’s disease, movement disorders, and related mental health and behavioral health concerns.
- Conduct presurgical psychological evaluations for patients preparing for neurosurgical procedures, including deep brain stimulation (DBS).
- Provide evidence-based cognitive behavioral therapy and behavioral interventions addressing physical symptoms, chronic medical conditions, and related psychological concerns.
- Collaborate with neurologists, neurosurgeons, neuropsychologists, dietitians, researchers, social workers, physical therapists, speech and language pathologists, and other members of interdisciplinary care teams.
- Contribute to the education, training, and mentorship of learners and participate in clinical teaching activities as assigned.
- Participate in departmental meetings, grand rounds, committees, quality improvement activities, and other academic activities as assigned.
- Collaborate with faculty and other institutional partners in clinical and research activities.
- Engage in ongoing professional development and maintain expertise in clinical health psychology and the psychological care of individuals with neurological and chronic medical conditions.

Required Qualifications:
Education: Doctorate degree in Clinical Psychology or Counseling Psychology from an APA- or CPA-accredited doctoral program.
- This position requires a formal degree in the cited discipline area(s) to ensure that candidates have the foundational knowledge and skill set required to perform the duties of the position. The level of degree is based on accreditation requirements, institutional standards of academic and professional excellence, alignment with peer institution benchmarks, and contributes to the credibility and effectiveness of the role within the university community.
Certifications/Licenses:
- Licensed or eligible for licensure as a psychologist in Kansas and Missouri by the time of appointment.
Work Experience:
- Completion of an APA-approved clinical internship.
- One year (1) of relevant postdoctoral experience in health psychology.
- Experience providing psychological assessment and treatment to individuals with chronic medical conditions, neurological conditions, or related health concerns.
Preferred Qualifications:
Work Experience:
- Experience working as part of a multidisciplinary clinical team.
- Experience providing psychological services to individuals with Parkinson’s disease, movement disorders, or other neurological conditions.
- Experience providing cognitive behavioral therapy for chronic physical illness, insomnia, chronic pain, or other health-related concerns.
- Experience providing behavioral interventions related to chronic illness management or sexual dysfunction.
- Experience providing smoking cessation interventions.
