The Deputy Director of Residential provides leadership and operational oversight for Residential Services, working closely with the Director of Residential to ensure safe, effective, and high-quality programming. The position provides hands-on leadership and direction to residential leadership teams, with a focus on complex program matters, quality and regulatory oversight, problem-solving, and consistent program operations. The Deputy Director serves as a key resource for people supported, families, staff, Care Managers, and other stakeholders, working collaboratively to address concerns, strengthen services, and promote positive outcomes for the people we support.
- Provides leadership, direction, and operational oversight across residential programs to promote safe, effective, person-centered, and consistent service delivery.
- Directly supervises Regional Assistant Directors and provides ongoing coaching, guidance, performance management, accountability, and professional development.
- Works with the Director of Residential to onboard, train, and orient new Assistant Directors and evaluates their performance and progress throughout the introductory period.
- Provides leadership and support during emergencies, staffing challenges, significant incidents, and other complex residential situations and assists leadership teams in developing and implementing appropriate plans for resolution.
- Develops and strengthens residential leadership teams by establishing clear expectations, promoting accountability, supporting effective decision-making, and fostering a positive workforce culture.
- Collaborates with Human Resources, the Director of Residential, and other agency leadership to identify staffing and training needs and strengthen staff development, recruitment, retention, and performance.
- Maintains a visible and accessible presence within residential programs through routine program visits, leadership meetings, audits, observations, and engagement with people supported and staff.
- Monitors program performance and identifies trends, risks, operational gaps, and opportunities for improvement while developing strategies to strengthen operations and prevent recurring concerns.
- Collaborates with Quality Assurance, Corporate Compliance, and residential leadership to ensure programs maintain regulatory compliance and meet applicable OPWDD, agency, and quality standards.
- Provides oversight of incident management and corrective actions, ensuring required immediate protections, safeguards, Plans of Corrective Action (POCAs), investigative recommendations, SIRC actions, and other follow-up requirements are completed accurately and within required timeframes.
- Reviews staffing patterns, staffing minimums, supervision needs, vacancies, overtime, and workforce trends to ensure programs are staffed safely and effectively while promoting responsible use of agency resources.
- Develops, reviews, and implements residential procedures, operational processes, tracking systems, and other tools to improve consistency, accountability, efficiency, and regulatory readiness across Residential Services.
- Collaborates with Facilities and Maintenance to ensure residential homes are safe, well maintained, and appropriate for the current and anticipated needs of the people supported.
- Receives and responds to concerns and feedback from people supported, families, and advocates and serves as a liaison with residential teams, Care Managers, and interdisciplinary team members to support appropriate resolution.
- Collaborates with Nursing, Clinical, Quality Assurance, Compliance, Human Resources, Facilities, Care Management, and other departments to address program needs and support residential initiatives.
- Supports admissions, transitions, relocations, and other significant changes within residential programs to ensure appropriate planning and coordination.
- Assists the Director of Residential with departmental planning, evaluation of program needs, development of priorities, implementation of strategic initiatives, and other related duties as assigned.
- Provides leadership, direction, and operational oversight across residential programs to promote safe, effective, person-centered, and consistent service delivery.
- Directly supervises Regional Assistant Directors and provides ongoing coaching, guidance, performance management, accountability, and professional development.
Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent; relevant combination of education and experience in Human Services or a related field.
- Valid New York State driver’s license and ability to travel between residential program locations as required.
- Minimum of five (5) years of progressive supervisory or leadership experience within the Human Services field.
Preferred Qualifications/Skills:
- Prior OPWDD experience
- Demonstrated ability to coach, develop, and hold leadership staff accountable while promoting a positive and collaborative work environment.
- Strong organizational, decision-making, and problem-solving skills, including the ability to manage multiple priorities and respond effectively to complex or urgent situations.
- Prior experience working within OPWDD-certified programs or other regulated Human Services environments.
- Knowledge of OPWDD regulations, incident management, quality assurance, compliance, and person-centered practices.
