Valmont is currently seeking a highly motivated and talented individual for the Shipping/Receiving Assistant position in the Petersburg, Virginia Coatings site. This is an individual contributor who will assist with receiving, unloading, and storing incoming products; inspecting finished products for damage and defects; ensuring all products meet established quality standards prior to distribution. They will operate heavy equipment used to move material including forklifts and pallet jacks. Incumbent will assist with detailed intake inspections of incoming materials, including measurements, photographic records, and written documentation, while creating material tags and maintaining accurate electronic records. Incumbent will assist with inspecting galvanized products to ensure a high-quality finished product and making recommendations to resolve any damage or defects found in products. Interact professionally with customers and truck drivers to facilitate efficient loading and unloading operations; coordinate special handling requirements identified during inspections; maintain plant cleanliness and organization through routine housekeeping; and consistently follow safety procedures, including the proper use of required personal protective equipment (PPE). Incumbent will assist with inspecting galvanized products to ensure a high-quality finished product and making recommendations to resolve any damage or defects found in products. Also, working closely with other employees to resolve any issues concerning customer orders.  When not involved with activities associated with the shipping / receiving of materials; the incumbent will be utilized in other areas of the facility as needed to assist with the production of galvanized materials. These departments can include rigging, process tanks, kettle, and dressing departments.

Essential Functions:

• Operate forklifts with the capacity to move up to 35,000 lbs. of material on and off flatbed trailers or box trucks when applicable.
• Communicating potential problems or needs with material to site leadership
• Inspect incoming material for proper venting and draining holes/lifting attachments
• Inspect galvanized material to ensure it meets the quality standards, reject material that does not meet quality standards, and coordinate special handling for this material
• Move pieces of steel and other material up to 50 pounds by hand from different locations in the plant and yard

Important Details about the Role

• The ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide
• Proficient with Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook and VCCMax (ability to learn VCCMax)
• Proficient at reading tags, bills of lading, and shipping and receiving papers
• Completion of the American Galvanizers Association (AGA) Inspection course
• Stand 90% of a shift and work outside in extreme weather conditions
• The ability to communicate and interact with coworkers in a positive manner
• Pay attention to detail and follow work instructions

• The ability to work overtime to include weekends and potentially holidays

• Answer phone calls, greet visitors, and direct appropriately

• Create tags on incoming products with details including piece count and finished product packaging
• Work daily with production to meet customer commitment request
• Help to expedite orders through shops to achieve on-time delivery of customers
• Provide updates regarding planned shipping & delivery dates
• Seek daily communication from upstream departments to ensure products are correctly prioritized
• Audit all material quality before shipping
• Ensure proper flow of paperwork for certifications and inspections
• Notify customers when material is complete and ready for pickup
• Coordinate 3rd party freight and arrange special packaging or shipping requirements as requested by customers

Required Qualifications for Every Candidate (Education, Experience, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities)

• Zero (0) to (1) year of relevant experience
• Ability to work with wood and small hand tools such as tape measures, saws, drills, riveters, and nail guns
• Ability to become certified in operation of overhead cranes and/or forklifts
• Ability to ensure that products meet quality standards
• Ability to bundle, crate, box, and wrap products to be shipped
• Ability to load a truck
• Ability to operate computer to enter product information
• High School Diploma or GED equivalent
• Excellent communication and customer service skills
• Must have a pleasant and friendly “can do” attitude
• Ability to be exposed to outdoors elements for significant durations of time
• Ability to wear all required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) when inside the production facility
• Must be a person of passion and integrity who has the drive to excel and deliver exceptional results
• Must be able to read and follow written and verbal instructions.

• Two (2) years of experience operating a forklift in a professional environment

Decision Making

Must be able to identify proper loading as per special loading instructions, identify quality issues and bring those to the attention of site leadership, and resolve identification and equipment issues by notifying the Lead or Supervisor.  Must be able to stage trailers with easy access to material being loaded.  Independent creativity for setting up and loading is required for 75% of this job function.  Ensure proper safety precautions are used during all aspects of loading and unloading while operating equipment.  Must communicate problems and/or needs departmental supervision to aid in the maximum utilization of equipment, material and human resources.

Physical Effort

Incumbent will be operating equipment including forklifts approximately 50% of the shift.  This requires continuous in and out of the equipment including standing, walking, bending, kneeling, squatting, climbing, twisting, and turning to inspect and correct material loads.  The other 50% will be spent walking and moving around product loads to create tags, inspect the quality of finished products, and entering data into the computer or assisting in other departments in the plant as needed.

Mental and Visual Effort

Constant visual effort must be expended while operating equipment in the congested areas around the galvanizing environment.  Must be mentally aware of how and where to place material on trucks being loaded and stage material for processing.  Must be aware of and practicing all safety considerations while operating equipment in and around the galvanizing area.  Employees must be aware that all custom material is to be identified and tagged.  Use of small hand tools including, saws, drills, riveters, and nail guns require employees to always be alert.

Responsibility for Equipment and Process

Proper attention is required while operating the equipment to minimize damage, extend the life of the equipment, and to perform in a safe and efficient manner.  Equipment is, but is not limited to, forklifts up to 35,000 lbs. Damage can be prevented by considerable care and attention. 

  

Responsibility for Material or Product

Considerable attention is required by the operator to eliminate the damage to material when handling customer product in work areas, including the weigh scale, storage, and cleanup areas, loading, and unloading of trucks. The probability is low if the operator is well trained and extreme caution is exercised.

Responsibility for Safety of Others

Extreme caution must be maintained to prevent injury to others when operating equipment in the storage yard, in and around vehicles, and inside the building. Must be very careful in identifying possible venting restrictions on material by informing the Lead or Supervisor to prevent zinc explosions.  Each employee is responsible for learning and applying all the safety training provided as outlined by the company and department safety representative and/or supervisor.  Keeping safety at the forefront in the daily performance of job duties includes personal safety, safety of others in the department and safekeeping of all company resources.  Actively participates in department safety; demonstrates excellent safety practices and behaviors and conforms to all Valmont safety policies and procedures.

JOB CONDITIONS

Working Conditions

Incumbent works outside majority of the shift.  Incumbent is operating equipment that emits fumes and vibrates.  Incumbent is continually exposed to all types of weather conditions including heat, cold, rain, ice, snow, wet, dusty, and windy.  Will be loading and unloading material on paved and rocked area which can be very rough, slick, and muddy at times.

Work is typically performed outside and on the shop floor.  The incumbent is regularly required to walk and carry out duties on the shop floor and in the yard.  Environment is fast-paced and demanding.  While visiting the manufacturing areas of the plant, use of PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) is always required. The employee frequently is required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel and reach with hands and arms while working in the office with various files and forms and while working on the computer. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, and depth perception. The Shipping/Receiving Coordinator works outside most of the shift. Incumbent is continually exposed to all types of weather conditions including heat, cold, rain, ice, snow, wet, dusty, and windy. Constant visual effort must be expended while in the congested areas around the galvanizing environment.  Employees must be aware that all custom material is to be identified and tagged

Hazards

Potential hazards include falls to the ground or from drop deck trailers due to slick working conditions, heat exhaustion or aggravations created by blowing dust and ash.  In addition, constant exposure to such hazards as burns, cuts, contusions of various degrees and eye injuries make the possibility for incidents high even under the best conditions.
