We’re looking for a highly motivated, customer service-oriented professional to fill a Permit Technician position. The ideal candidate brings outstanding customer service skills and enjoys working on development permits. In this role, you will join a fast-paced, dynamic team environment. Using strong communication skills, you will thrive on a high volume of daily interactions with internal and external customers via email, phone, virtually, or at the Permit Center public counter. The Permit Technician role has diverse applications and focused on residential permits. This position receives direct supervision from the Permit Center Coordinator and may assist with training of other staff members. Permit Technician
Efficiently process building and fire protection permit applications and ensure all necessary approvals are obtained from City Departments and external agencies.
Perform elementary plan check duties on same-day permits, reviewing applications for completeness and conformance to building/fire codes, and City requirements following appropriate policies and procedures.
Respond to inquiries and confer with developers, engineers, contractors, architects, and the public concerning development review requirements, building and fire codes, and permit regulations in-person at the public counter, on the phone, virtually or by email.
Build positive working relationships with customers and other City staff to successfully manage permits from initial submittal to construction completion.
Calculate and collect various plan check and permit fees as necessary.
Permit Technician
Equivalent to the completion of twelfth grade.
College-level courses in construction management or building inspection techniques.
Three years of increasingly responsible office/clerical experience that involves public contact.
Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid California Driver License.
Bonus Points:
Experience in planning, zoning, or a public permit center.
You work well in a fast-paced and dynamic team environment.
You are detail-oriented and highly organized with strong project management skills to keep track of multiple and varying permit processes, deadlines, and customer communications.
You are patient, adaptable, flexible and solution-oriented in ambiguous situations.
You have excellent written and verbal communication, active listening, and customer service skills.
You possess some knowledge of permit processing and construction.
You’re naturally create positive working relationships with customers, city staff, design and construction professionals, and the community to make sure their needs are met.
You enjoy analyzing and resolving challenges or issues that arise.

Fine Print. The annual salary range for a Permit Technician is $94,057 - $114,290; with a 5-step scale. Pay beyond the control point may be awarded for exceptional experience and qualifications upon hire and/or for meritorious performance while serving.
