Grand Rapids area drivers: Great Lakes regional freight, plenty of drop and hook, and your weekends at home.
Your CDL is new? Good. This account trains drivers who are just starting out.
Questions new drivers ask us
- “How often am I home?” Every weekend.
- “How much do I make while I learn?” $900 a week, one of the highest training rates Swift pays.
- “What about after training?” Your pay is guaranteed at $1,000 a week for your first 3 months solo.
- “Does my CDL school count?” If it was 120 hours or more, yes.
Your paycheck
- $1,100 to $1,500 average weekly gross
- $0.56 per mile to start
- $15 for each extra stop
- 1,500 to 2,000 miles a week
Where you run
Regional loads around the Great Lakes, staying close to home. Lots of drop and hook, plus some live loads and unloads. Day and night dispatches. Michigan winters and changing routes come with the job.
Your first six weeks
It starts with a phone call where a recruiter goes over your license and record. Orientation lasts no more than 2 days, your hotel is covered and your bus ticket is reimbursed, and you get $300 once hired. Then 4 to 6 weeks with a mentor who teaches you backing, trip planning, logs and fueling. Then the truck is yours.
You will need
- A Class A CDL and to be 21 or older
- 120 hours of CDL school, or 6 months of recent driving
- Up to 2 moving violations in 2 years, no DUI/DWI in 10
- DOT physical plus hair and urine drug test
Benefits from day 31: medical, dental, vision, prescriptions, 401(k), stock purchase plan, paid time off, and a tuition free online degree for you plus one family member.
