Description
Description
The Project Engineer role is a developmental position and is not intended as a long-term destination. Project Engineers spend approximately twelve months learning Corvant’s operations through on-site work, project documentation and controls, and introductory exposure to scheduling, procurement, and project financials, without carrying Assistant Project Manager-level responsibility.
Each Project Engineer is assigned a Program Sponsor — a tenured field leader who provides day-to-day coaching, models Corvant’s standards for safety, quality, communication, and ownership, and contributes input to each performance review.
Performance is reviewed on a four-month cadence. At the conclusion of the development period, Project Engineers who meet the advancement criteria below progress into either an Assistant Project Manager or an Assistant Superintendent role, based on demonstrated strengths, interests, performance, and business needs.
Responsibilities
Program Participation
• Work on site full time for the duration of the 12-month development program, shadowing experienced field leaders, learning disciplined jobsite operations, and contributing to the successful delivery of assigned projects.
• Complete all required training topics in each phase of the program and participate fully in performance reviews on a four-month cadence.
• Follow direction, task assignments, and coaching from the assigned Program Sponsor, Superintendent, and Project Manager.
Professional Expectations
• Communicate clearly, concisely, and professionally with teammates, clients, subcontractors, and vendors, using audience-appropriate written and verbal communication.
• Organize and manage multiple tasks and priorities while maintaining attention to detail in fast-moving field conditions.
• Act with integrity, accountability, and respect in every interaction.
• Seek continuous improvement by asking thoughtful questions, taking initiative, and applying feedback.
• Adapt to changing technology, designs, schedules, means, and methods while staying focused on safe, reliable, and practical solutions.
• Collaborate effectively with people from a range of backgrounds and build productive working relationships.
• Be punctual, engaged, prepared, and respectful of others on every jobsite and in every meeting.
Project Documentation and Controls
• Set up and maintain the jobsite office and project records, including project directories, construction documents, subcontractor directories, daily reports, submittal logs, RFI logs, and subcontractor correspondence.
• Update as-built drawings as directed and interpret basic coordination drawings to support accurate field execution.
• Make periodic updates to the project schedule as directed.
• Complete basic material take-offs, place supplier orders, and receive delivery of materials.
• Interpret basic tests and reports, such as air balance reports, soils reports, and concrete test results.
• Assist Project Managers with logistical tasks, including budgeting support, coordination, documentation, and client support, as needed.
• Develop an understanding of the cost implications associated with specific construction tasks at various stages of a project.
Field Operations Support
• Support safe site readiness by directing installation of building and site protection, including signage and postings, and identifying items required to make areas safe before demolition.
• Assist with specific construction tasks as directed, bringing a hands-on, team-first approach to field learning and project support.
• Participate in site inspections to help ensure Corvant’s expectations for quality, workmanship, safety, and reliable execution are met.
• Assist the Superintendent in the use of survey and layout instruments.
• Set up and run subcontractor foremen’s meetings when directed by the Superintendent.
Safety
• Assist in implementing Corvant’s Corporate Safety Program by conducting weekly safety meetings, supporting toolbox talks, and completing required safety reports when directed.
• Comply with all Corvant, client, and jobsite safety requirements at all times.
Other duties may be assigned as business needs require.
Advancement Criteria
Advancement to Assistant Project Manager or Assistant Superintendent is based on demonstrated readiness, not time in role alone. To be considered for advancement, a Project Engineer is expected to:
• Complete all required training topics for each phase of the program.
• Receive satisfactory or better ratings on each four-month performance review.
• Demonstrate proficiency in project documentation and controls, drawing interpretation, jobsite safety practices, and subcontractor coordination.
• Receive a recommendation from the assigned Project Manager and Superintendent.
Advancement decisions are made jointly by the assigned Project Manager, the Superintendent, and Human Resources, with input from the Program Sponsor.
A Project Engineer who has not met the criteria at the end of the development period may be placed on a written development plan for a defined extension period and reassessed. Advancement is not automatic, and continued employment in the Project Engineer role beyond the extension period is subject to performance and business needs.
Requirements
Qualifications
• Associate or bachelor’s degree in construction management, engineering, or a related field is preferred.
• In lieu of a degree, equivalent relevant experience will be considered, including military service and verifiable commercial construction field experience.
• Previous experience on commercial jobsites is strongly preferred.
• Passion for the construction industry, on-site work, and building systems that support complex, mission-critical environments.
• Ability to learn sector- and project-specific software systems, including Microsoft Office 365, Procore, Adobe Suite, Bluebeam, and JD Edwards.
• Valid driver’s license and ability to travel to assigned jobsites.
Physical Requirements and Work Environment
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met to successfully perform the essential functions of this role. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform these functions.
• Ability to walk and stand for extended periods.
• Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
• Ability to work on active construction sites, including exposure to outdoor weather conditions, noise, dust, and uneven terrain.
• Regular travel to assigned jobsites is required. Assignments are typically within commuting distance of the assigned office location; project needs may require travel beyond that range or temporary assignment to another location.
