Position Description

The McGill University Department of Medicine in the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences is inviting applications for a full-time position at the rank of Assistant Professor (Tenure Track) based at the Research Institute of the McGill University Hospital Centre (RI-MUHC) or the Lady Davis Institute (LDI).

McGill University is one of Canada’s premier universities, and the Department of Medicine is a leader in academic medicine with over 480 full-time faculty members across 15 Divisions. The department’s educational and research missions support world class clinical and translational research across our main teaching hospitals: the McGill University Health Centre, the Jewish General Hospital and St- Mary’s Hospital. We host a Graduate Program in Clinical and Translational Research that seeks to develop leading clinician scientists and PhD scientists. The Graduate Program currently has two streams (Experimental Medicine and Digital Innovation) with an upcoming third stream in Clinical Research.

The Research Institute of the McGill University Health Centre (RI-MUHC) is home to McGill faculty whose research programs are primarily based at the McGill University Health Centre. The Lady Davis Institute (LDI) is home to McGill faculty whose research programs are primarily based at the Jewish General Hospital. A shared priority of the RI-MUHC, the LDI, and the McGill University Department of Medicine is to increase the number of high-quality, high-impact randomized controlled trials.

The Department of Medicine’s Division of Clinical Epidemiology is home to clinical research methodologists (mainly Epidemiologists and Biostatisticians) who collaborate with clinician-researchers across the other Divisions, as well as other Departments, to: i) deliver the highest quality science; ii) identify and address novel gaps in methodology; and, iii) teach clinical trainees in the appraisal and execution of clinical research methods.

Job Duties

The successful candidate would join a vibrant and growing community of methodologists that extends beyond the Department of Medicine, including the Faculty’s Department of Epidemiology, Biostatistics and Occupational Health (EBOH). By drawing on the complementary strengths of EBOH, the Division of Clinical Epidemiology, and methodologists and trainees embedded across other Departments and Divisions, the candidate would become part of a robust, cross-Faculty network committed to the development and application of rigorous biostatistical methods. This breadth of collaboration offers exceptional opportunities for interdisciplinary partnership, mentorship, and methodological innovation.

The successful candidate will be expected to develop an independent research program in the area of trial methods. They will also collaborate with other PIs by providing high-level methodological expertise for the design/conduct of clinical trials, especially novel designs. The incumbent will also be expected to advise on trial design across a diverse range of studies encompassing both early and late phase clinical trials and a variety of interventions across several disease states and provide statistical guidance for data analysis and reporting. Expertise in one or more of platform, (Bayesian) adaptive, and/or externally controlled trial methods will be particularly relevant.

The successful candidate will become an integral member of the clinical trialist community and facilitate pan-Canadian collaborations on best practices in clinical trials and increase methodologic capacity for clinical trials at McGill. In tandem with their research activities, the incumbent will supervise graduate trainees in the Department of Medicine’s Graduate Program in Clinical and Translational Research. They will also be expected to provide formal didactic teaching to graduate and clinical trainees enrolled in the Master’s and PhD programs of the Department of Medicine.

In addition, the successful candidate will be expected to build and lead an independent research program in trial methodology. The incumbent will also be expected to be actively involved in all aspects of McGill’s academic mission (i.e., research, teaching, supervision of graduate students and residents, and involvement in academic and administrative committees).

McGill faculty members are expected to contribute to service activities within their units, the University, and the wider scholarly community. A demonstrated commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion is also expected.

Qualifications and Education Requirements

Candidates must have:

  • A PhD in biostatistics, statistics, epidemiology, or a closely related field;

  • Relevant research experience in the development and application of methods for clinical research and large complex health-related data, particularly in the context of novel clinical trials;

  • A track record of research productivity as evidenced by methodologic and substantive peer-reviewed publications in a lead author role, the potential to develop an internationally recognized independent research program, a demonstrated ability to obtain grants for his/her own research, and to contribute to the building of successful research programs;

  • A track record of successful and synergistic collaboration with clinicians and PhD scientists in health research;

  • A demonstrated commitment to excellence in teaching in the fields of biostatistics;

  • Fluency in English is essential; a proficiency in French, or a commitment to acquiring it within a few years of appointment is preferred.
