General Accountant

A SNAPSHOT OF YOUR ROLE

The General Accountant will be responsible for maintaining accurate financial records and preparing timely, reliable financial reports to support business decision-making. The role has a strong focus on financial statement preparation, balance sheet management, Profit & Loss reporting, income statement analysis, reconciliations, and month-end reporting.

The successful candidate will have strong technical accounting knowledge and the ability to understand the relationship between the Balance Sheet, P&L, and Income Statement, identify variances, investigate discrepancies, and provide meaningful financial insights to management.

Key Responsibilities

Financial Statement Preparation & Reporting

• Prepare accurate and timely monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements.
• Prepare and maintain Balance Sheet, Profit & Loss, and Income Statement reports.
• Review financial statements to ensure completeness, accuracy, and consistency.
• Perform detailed analysis of financial statement accounts and investigate unusual movements or discrepancies.
• Prepare supporting schedules and working papers for financial reporting.
• Ensure financial reports are prepared in accordance with applicable accounting standards and company policies.

Balance Sheet Management

• Maintain and reconcile Balance Sheet accounts, including:

• • Accounts receivable and payable

• • Cash and bank accounts

• • Prepayments and accruals

• • Fixed assets and depreciation

• • Loans and other liabilities

• • Intercompany balances

• • Equity and retained earnings

• Perform monthly Balance Sheet reconciliations and ensure reconciling items are investigated and resolved promptly.
• Monitor account movements and identify potential errors, omissions, or unusual transactions.
• Maintain accurate supporting documentation for all Balance Sheet accounts.

Profit & Loss / Income Statement

• Prepare and review monthly Profit & Loss and Income Statement reports.
• Analyse revenue, cost of sales, operating expenses, gross profit, EBITDA/operating profit, and other key financial metrics.
• Conduct month-on-month and budget-versus-actual variance analysis.
• Investigate significant variances and provide explanations to management.
• Identify trends and financial movements that may impact business performance.
• Ensure revenue and expenses are accurately recognised in the appropriate accounting period.

Month-End & Year-End Close

• Manage accounting activities during the month-end and year-end closing process.
• Prepare journals, accruals, prepayments, depreciation, provisions, and other month-end adjustments.
• Complete balance sheet reconciliations and ensure all accounts are properly supported.
• Review the trial balance before financial statements are finalised.
• Work closely with internal stakeholders to resolve outstanding accounting issues and meet reporting deadlines.

Financial Analysis & Business Support

• Provide financial analysis and insights to support management decision-making.
• Explain key movements in the financial statements in a clear and commercially relevant manner.
• Assist with budgeting, forecasting, and financial planning activities.
• Identify opportunities to improve financial controls, reporting accuracy, and accounting processes.
• Support management with ad hoc financial reporting and analysis as required.

Key Skills & Experience

• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
• Minimum 2 years of relevant accounting experience
• Strong hands-on experience preparing Balance Sheet, P&L, and Income Statement reports.
• Experience with month-end and year-end financial close.
• Strong account reconciliation and variance analysis skills.
• Good understanding of accruals, prepayments, depreciation, provisions, and journal entries.
• Strong attention to detail and ability to identify financial discrepancies.
• Proficiency in accounting systems and Microsoft Excel.
• Ability to analyse financial information and clearly explain financial movements to non-finance stakeholders.
