OVERVIEW:

The Division of Pulmonary Medicine seeks a dynamic and innovative new Division Director.

The Division of Pulmonary Medicine is consistently recognized as one of the best in the nation, recently ranked the #2 Pulmonology and Lung Surgery Program in the nation by U.S. News & World Report (2025-26). The division is organized around several specialized programs and centers, each with its own medical leadership and strategic focus. These include the:

• Airway and Aerodigestive Center
• Asthma Center
• Bronchopulmonary Dysplasia Program
• Cystic Fibrosis Center
• General Pulmonology Program
• Lung Transplant Program
• Rare Lung Disease Program
• Pulmonary Rehabilitation Program
• Sleep Medicine Center

This structure fosters clinical excellence, multidisciplinary collaboration, and team science across the full spectrum of pediatric pulmonary and sleep disorders.

Research highlights: The division of Pulmonary Medicine has a strong track record of extramural funding. These resources support a broad and diverse research portfolio spanning basic, translational, clinical, and health services research. Major research areas include laboratory-based research in cystic fibrosis and gene therapy; clinical and translational research in asthma, bronchopulmonary dysplasia, lung imaging, and pulmonary vascular disease; computational fluid dynamics applied to airway disorders and pulmonary circulation; and sleep and circadian biology. In addition, faculty members lead innovative programs in health services and healthcare delivery science aimed at improving the quality, efficiency, and outcomes of care for children with respiratory disorders. The division also houses an NIH/NIDDK-funded P30 Personalized Cystic Fibrosis Therapy and Cystic Fibrosis Research Development Program (RDP). Advanced imaging programs leverage hyperpolarized xenon MRI and computational modeling to characterize airway structure, motion, and airflow. Close collaboration with the Division of Pulmonary Biology links well-characterized clinical cohorts with prospective consent, biobanking, iPSC models, pulmonary pathology, and mechanistic studies.

Training programs: The Division of Pulmonary Medicine directs two ACGME-accredited fellowship programs: the Pediatric Pulmonary Medicine Fellowship Program  and the Sleep Fellowship Program and one non-ACGME accredited bronchology fellowship. For over 12 years, the division has successfully maintained NIH T35 funding, supporting 12 first-year medical students annually in conducting mentored summer research projects. In addition, the Divisions of Pulmonary Biology and Pulmonary Medicine jointly support a federally funded T32 training program dedicated to the development of early-career investigators.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

The division director is supported by an endowed chair and has the opportunity to lead one of the nation’s premier pediatric pulmonary and sleep medicine programs, shaping its future while building upon a legacy of excellence, innovation, collaboration, and impact.

The next division director will:

• Be a visionary leader with a demonstrated commitment to exceptional patient outcomes, scientific advancement, and academic excellence.

The ability to balance fiscal stewardship with investments in people, innovation, and program development will be critical to maintaining the division’s national leadership and continued success.

Qualifications and Experience

The ideal candidate will have the following:

• M.D. or M.D./Ph.D., with board certification in pediatric pulmonology

• Ability to obtain State of Ohio Medical Board licensure
• Rank of associate or full professor with eligibility for appointment as an affiliated faculty at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine
• Strong national and international reputation in the field of pediatric pulmonology
• Track record of successfully implementing new initiatives that meet the challenges of academic medicine and clinical care
• Accomplishment in faculty leadership, people management, and skills in planning and facilitation
• Demonstration of sustained excellence in research productivity, clinical care, and/or mentorship/teaching of trainees and junior faculty
• Knowledge of relevant federal and state laws and regulations
• Experience in a complex, integrated academic medical setting
• Demonstration of a personal style that facilitates communication, collaboration, trust, credibility, and confidence among divisional faculty and across the health system
