Course Description:

EDSL 620. Social Justice Issues in Second Language Education.

Description: An examination of social identity, non-dominant languages, and power relations among speakers, and their impact on the nature of second/additional language teaching, learning and use, from the perspective of critical applied linguistics. Topics range from the micro level of the individual to the macro level of language planning and policy-making.

This course is not Team Taught or offered online.

Teaching Qualification Requirements (TQRs):

Education:

1.PhD in a relevant field (e.g., applied linguistics, second language education, sociolinguistics, language education, or related interdisciplinary fields).

2.Academic and/or professional background relevant to the social, cultural, and political dimensions of second/additional language education.


Experience:

1.Experience teaching, researching, and/or working in areas related to social issues in second/additional language education.

2.Demonstrated knowledge of:

  • Critical applied linguistics and related critical perspectives on second/additional language education.
  • Relationships among language, social identity, power, and linguistic diversity.
  • Social, cultural, political, and institutional dimensions of second/additional language teaching, learning, and use.
  • Language planning, policy, and related issues affecting language education and language users.

3. Experience engaging learners in critical examination of social issues related to second/additional language education.


Other:

1.Knowledge of the impact and experience integrating pedagogical approaches anchored to equity, diversity and inclusion

2.Familiarity using myCourses, Zoom and/or other similar online platforms to facilitate quality teaching and learning experiences

3.Familiarity with the application of a variety of digital teaching and learning tools

4.Familiarity teaching blended classes

5.Instruction in this course may be delivered remotely if indicated as required by the university.
