Summary
We are seeking a highly motivated Senior Tax Accountant to join our Tax team in Houston, Texas. This role will support U.S. and international tax compliance, tax provision calculations, tax planning initiatives, and various special projects. The ideal candidate will possess strong technical tax knowledge, excellent analytical skills, and the ability to collaborate effectively across finance and business functions.
This position offers an opportunity to work on complex tax matters within a global organization while developing expertise across federal, state, and international tax disciplines.
Job Responsibilities
Tax Compliance
- Support US federal, state, and local tax compliance.
- Support international tax compliance and reporting requirements.
- Prepare tax account reconciliations and related supporting schedules.
- Coordinate with external advisors and service providers on tax filings.
Tax Accounting & Reporting
- Assist in the preparation of quarterly and annual income tax provisions under ASC 740 utilizing OneSource software.
- Analyze deferred tax assets and liabilities.
- Support uncertain tax position (UTP) analyses and documentation.
- Maintain tax accounting records and support SOX/internal control requirements.
Tax Planning & Projects
- Support domestic and international tax planning initiatives.
- Research tax issues and prepare technical memoranda.
- Assist with mergers, acquisitions, restructurings, and special projects.
- Monitor and analyze tax law changes and assess potential impacts on the business.
Audits & Controversy
- Assist with federal, state, and foreign tax audits.
- Gather documentation and respond to information requests from taxing authorities.
- Support resolution of tax notices and inquiries.
- Promote personal accountability for Health, Safety, Security, and Environment (HSSE) by adhering to the principles and guidelines outlined in HMH's HSSE governing policy
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree from an accredited university or college (or a high school diploma / GED with at least 7 years of relevant experience)
- Minimum 3 years of relevant professional level experience
- Strong understanding of U.S. federal income taxation.
- Experience preparing corporate income tax returns and related workpapers.
- Familiarity with ASC 740 tax accounting concepts.
- Advanced Microsoft Excel skills.
- Strong analytical, organizational, and communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications
- CPA certification (or actively pursuing CPA).
- Experience with multinational corporations.
- Exposure to state and local tax, international tax, or transfer pricing.
- Experience with tax provision software and ERP systems (e.g., OneSource, SAP, Oracle FCCS, Smartview).
- Demonstrate attention to detail and a commitment to accuracy.
- Be comfortable managing multiple priorities and deadlines.
- Take ownership of projects and work independently.
- Effectively communicate technical tax concepts to non-tax stakeholders.
- Thrive in a collaborative, fast-paced environment.
- Have a continuous improvement mindset.
