Position Summary:

The Performing and Visual Arts Department at the University of Wisconsin-Platteville invites applications for a collaborative and community-minded colleague to serve as Director of Choral Studies at the rank of Assistant Professor, beginning in August 2027. This is a full-time, tenure-track, benefits-eligible position with a salary range of $60,000 - $68,000, commensurate with qualifications and experience.

The choral department at UW-Platteville has a long and rich tradition of excellence in performance and in the training of undergraduate choral conductors and music educators. UW-Platteville undergraduates have held significant positions in all levels of choral music, houses of worship, and communities in Wisconsin and beyond.

The successful candidate will contribute to the continued success and growth of the choral and music programs while building on the program’s tradition of excellence and responding to current trends in the profession. The candidate will collaborate with the Associate Director of Choirs and other music faculty to support the undergraduate program, its ensembles, students, and activities.

Key Job Responsibilities:

  • Lead UW-Platteville’s choral ensembles.
  • Teach undergraduate choral literature, choral conducting, music history, and other courses based on departmental needs and the candidate’s areas of expertise.
  • Work closely with other music faculty to support the music program.
  • Recruit and retain students and contribute to the growth of the music program and greater Platteville community.
  • Collaborate with faculty and university ensembles as appropriate.
  • Effectively create and administer departmental concerts, recruitment events, festivals, and other program activities.
  • Maintain an active professional profile as a performer and teacher in the field of choral music.
  • Participate in departmental and university service as appropriate.

Required Qualifications:

  • Doctoral degree in Choral Conducting, Choral Music Education, Music Education, Music, or a closely related field, conferred by the position start date.
  • 1 semester (4.5 months) of teaching and conducting at the collegiate level. Conducting experience must include members with varying skill levels and background.
  • 1 semester (4.5 months) of collaborating with schools, community, or professional organizations.
  • Professional engagement with at least one national or international choral organization.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.

Why it is great to be a Pioneer:

The University of Wisconsin-Platteville, founded in 1866, offers associate, baccalaureate, and master’s degree programs in a broad spectrum of disciplines including: science, technology, engineering, and mathematics; criminal justice; education; business; agriculture; and liberal arts. The Platteville campus is located in Southwest Wisconsin's largest community, which has a rich history rooted in mining —particularly lead mining —dating back to the early 19th century. The region offers excellent school systems, high-quality medical and hospital facilities, outstanding recreational opportunities, and vibrant businesses and industries. UW-Platteville serves as a cultural and educational center for the Tri-State region of Illinois, Iowa, and Wisconsin.

About the Music Program

An accredited member of the National Association of Schools of Music, the University of Wisconsin-Platteville serves over 500 students from across the university who study in our classes, perform in our ensembles, or engage in our instrumental and vocal studios. In addition, the Music program serves as a vital cultural resource in our region, annually hosting a choral festival, a jazz festival, a piano clinic, an honors band, and the state-level solo and ensemble competition that draw high school music students and teachers from southwest Wisconsin and the surrounding tri-state area.

The Choral program includes five vibrant ensembles, four full-time faculty members, a myriad of practicum-based opportunities for undergraduate students, and a wealth of rewarding experiences for those who love to sing and want to be a part of our choral community. Each choir is comprised of students pursuing a diverse spectrum of majors, and all singers are welcome, regardless of prior experience or ability.

Application deadline:

To ensure full consideration, applications must be received by November 7, 2026. Applications will be accepted until the position has been filled.

The following documents are required for applicant consideration:

  • A letter of interest.
  • Current curriculum vitae.
  • Names and contact information for three professional references.
  • Statement of conducting and teaching philosophy.
  • Links to two videos - one of a choral rehearsal and one of a live choral performance, maximum 20 minutes in length for each (with the camera facing you from the ensemble’s perspective).
