Summary of Job Duties:

The Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at the University of Arkansas, Fayetteville, invites applications for a standard nine-month, tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor to start August 2027 in the broadly defined area of computation, modeling, simulation, and theory. Of particular interest are candidates with research interests in computational materials chemistry. The successful candidate will establish an independent, externally funded research program and teach undergraduate and graduate courses in their area of expertise.

The Department has expertise in solid state materials synthesis and characterization, notably in systems relevant to electrocatalysis, photochemistry, and energy conversion. This search invites candidates who could complement these strengths by adding computational materials chemistry expertise. The successful candidate will develop a research program that contributes both to ongoing work in the department and develops an independent research program. The development and implementation of artificial intelligence and machine learning tools in research are also of interest.

This is an in-person position. Most university classes are offered face-to-face, and extensive in-person engagement in such activities as office hours, student advising, and departmental, college, and university committee meetings is essential to advancing student success and departmental effectiveness.

Regular, reliable, and non-disruptive attendance is an essential job duty, as is the ability to create and maintain collegial, harmonious working relationships with others.

About the Department:
The Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry is part of a thriving R1 research institution, offering a stimulating environment for interdisciplinary collaboration and innovation. Faculty balance research, teaching, and service with a typical teaching load of one course per semester. The department provides a collegial and supportive environment for faculty development. We have state-of-the-art facilities for modern chemical research, including advanced instrumentation for X-ray, NMR, mass spectrometry, materials characterization, and high-performance computing.

Duties will include:

• 20% Academic Service Activities


Qualifications:


Minimum Qualifications:

  • Terminal degree equivalent to a Ph.D. in Chemistry (or a closely related field) from an accredited institution of higher education conferred by the date of initial appointment
  • Evidence of, or a demonstrated potential for, exceptional teaching and mentoring at the undergraduate and graduate level
  • Evidence of, or a demonstrated potential for, external funded research and scholarly/creative activity

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in interdisciplinary, transdisciplinary, and/or cross-campus collaborations
  • Significant experience in computational chemistry, broadly defined
  • Strong record of successful publication and external funding in the thematic and/or methodological areas of position focus
  • Demonstrated ability to develop effective undergraduate and graduate classes that complement the current course catalog
  • Experience in mentoring undergraduate and graduate students in independent research
  • Strong evidence of the ability to be an active, involved, and collegial member of a collaborative faculty team both on campus and in relevant national service organizations
  • At least one year of postdoctoral research experience

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to develop and sustain an externally funded research program
